CLINTON, S.C. - Sophomore wide receiver Bruce Smith (Shelby, N.C.) had the big play in PC's final scrimmage of the preseason on Saturday when he caught a 41-yard pass from redshirt-freshman quarterback Brandon Miley (Wilmington, N.C.) late in the intersquad scrimmage that was part of Presbyterian College's annual Fan Day at Bailey Memorial Stadium.

The catch set PC's offense up for a 29-yard field goal kick by sophomore kicker Cam Miller (Lyman, S.C.) to end the two-hour scrimmage.

Two series earlier, redshirt-freshman Mario Carter (Columbia, S.C.) scored the only touchdown in the scrimmage when he pulled in a two-yard pass from Miley on a fourth-and-goal situation. Miller sent the extra-point kick through the uprights to punctuate the score.

Other offensive sparks included sophomore running back Trandon Dendy (Laurens, S.C.), who pulled in a 22-yard pass and added three rushes for 11 yards. Senior George Mathis (Aiken, S.C.) led the Blue Hose with six runs and three catches.

In addition to Miley, junior Tim Webb (Lugoff, S.C.), redshirt-sophomore Parker Fleming (Atlanta, Ga.) and freshman Bo Hatchett (Mt. Airy, Ga.) also saw significant time under center for PC. Webb led the Blue Hose with 18 complete passes, including five straight in the second half.

Junior linebacker Josh Tavernier (Anderson, S.C.) led PC's defense with five and a half tackles. Seniors Antwan Thomas (Hawkinsville, Ga.) and Marcus Boyd (Spartanburg, S.C.) picked off passes and the team registered five pass breakups. Thomas also contributed on special teams when he blocked a field goal attempt late in the game.

The scrimmage was the culminating event of PC's 2008 "Paint It Blue" Fan Day which kicked off at noon at Bailey Memorial Stadium with games and facepainting for the children as well as musical accompaniment by the Blue Hose pep band. Head coach Bobby Bentley arrived at 1 p.m. with his squad and the coaching staff and players signed autographs before PC's third and final preseason scrimmage.

PC opens its season on Aug. 30 at Wofford.
