DeLAND, Fla. – The word "turbulent" would be a proper summarization of the Presbyterian College softball team's last 24 hours at the Stetson Invitational, determined to one-up yesterday's hysteria that included the program's first sequence of consecutive extra-inning bouts since 2007. On Sunday, a 5-3 triumph over Cornell brought PC a bounce-back W and a Big Red sweep following a walk-off loss to Stetson last night, although lightning struck twice today for another final-inning Hatters stunner, this one by a 1-0 difference.
Far and away the team's biggest strength with 15 games gone, the Blue Hose defense was up to their usual stability for 99% of Sunday's two-parter, tossing two complete-game gems from
Morgan Hess and preseason Big South Pitcher of the Year
Jenna Greene. Unfortunately, a sacrifice bunt error in the day's main event besieged PC with its second heartbreak by walk-off, moving the squad to a still-impressive overall record of 13-2.
NOTABLES
- Generating a hitting/pitching stat line that would make most opponents crumble, Hess torched Cornell on both sides of the field in Presbyterian's second win over the last three days versus their Ivy League counterpart, going 2-of-4 with three RBI and a pair of homers in the 3
rd and 7
th innings. As if that wasn't intimidating enough, the reigning all-conference second-teamer retired six batters for the 19
th personal win of a career that is just getting started, jetting to 4-0 on the year.
- Across the Big Red W, the top four in the PC order (
Gracie DeCuir,
Kaitlyn Tucker,
Lath Freeman, and Hess) were responsible for the team's quintet of runs scored, led by Hess' two. The Blue Hose landed eight hits after posting nine against the Hatters in their previous encounter, finding a 2-of-3 effort at the plate from rightfielder
Bailey Watkins to reach a .538 average in 13 at-bats.
- Freeman and leftfielder
Rebecca Clark both doubled in the team's 13
th win of the campaign, giving head coach
David Williams' roster 30 extra-base swings to this point. Elsewhere, Tucker became the fourth player on the team to navigate her third stolen base of the year, keeping PC's perfect ratio intact in that department (19-for-19).
- There weren't many hitting highlights to speak of for either side in the second half of Sunday's two-parter, a highly-hyped rematch against Stetson that duplicated last night's account with a tied score in the seventh. While the climax was similar, the destination to that finish was substantially different than the one less than 24 hours earlier, owing to the nonstop pitching strife between Greene and Hannah Marien.
- The two starters combined to allow just two hits, with Greene canning five on her way to another all-star performance in the circle. It became a harsh fact that one of the two had to take the loss, with the pendulum of burden landing on the Blue Hose.
GAME 1 – Presbyterian (13-1) def. Cornell (1-4), 5-3
- PC's second Cornell W was largely categorized as a game of runs between the now-familiar foes, as Freeman and Hess' deep shots put coach Williams' club up by three with three innings away. The Big Red punched back with three straight scores of their own all in two plays in the bottom of the next frame, although Hess recovered nicely by holding the northern visitors off the board over the last 13 at-bats plus going yard for the second time to retake the advantage.
- The second occasion of the year that a Blue Hose member has reached two HR's in the same game (coincidentally also the second time that Hess has done so in her time at the collegiate level), the sophomore's fifth longball of the semester and 21
st of her PC tenure put the contest to bed in the last stanza.
- Already in a tie for fifth-place among all Presbyterian players in the program's 25-year history for total home runs, Hess became the first jersey to wrangle in double-digits on the year by sending her season RBI count to 11. The Virginian has emerged as the new team-leader in slugging percentage at .711, balancing her tremendous batting numbers with 34 frames of work as a pitcher, all of which has kept her perfect win-loss resume intact.
GAME 2 – Stetson (11-5) def. Presbyterian (13-2), 1-0
- Unquestionably dominated by defense to conclude PC's ultra-busy weekend, Stetson's unconventional method of victory stained an otherwise extraordinary preventative job from Greene as the conductor, holding the Hatters to their second-lowest run total of the season.
- Remarkably the sixth time this year that Stetson escaped via walk-off to end the 15-inning stretch of tension that consumed the two sides' last encounters, PC fell victim to late-game theatrics from the hosting side, although still at +36 in the season's overall scoring count and still holding the team's greatest start through 15 games in the school's Division I era.
UP NEXT
- A very popular site for the bulk of Presbyterian's nonconference schedule, the Blue Hose will stay in Clinton for their next seven matchups beginning this Friday. Up next on the docket: the Buffalo Bulls, who claimed their third victory of the semester on Sunday over Saint Peter's by an 8-6 clip.
- The doubleheader against the New Yorkers – which will mark the first ever series between the two dueling sides – gets started at 1:00 p.m., streamed live via ESPN+.
