CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women’s lacrosse team held a two-goal lead midway through the second half, but could not hold off LIU Brooklyn as the Blackbirds scored four straight to take a 12-10 victory Monday afternoon at Old Bailey Stadium. LIU Brooklyn improves to 1-3 on the year, while the Blue Hose fall to 0-6.
Three Blue Hose scored twice in the loss: Ellie Stader finished with two goals and an assist, with Cassie Watters and Cady Roberts adding a pair of goals each. Taylor Johnson had six draw controls, Maura Talvacchia caused three turnovers, and Kayla Koch picked up a team-high nine ground balls. The freshman goalie faced 23 shots and made 11 saves for a 47.8 save percentage.
Roberts scored her third goal of the season with 27:01 to play in the first half to open the scoring. The visitors responded with four unanswered goals before Stader found the back of the net for her third of the year. Watters posted her second goal of the season to cap off a 4-0 run by the Blue Hose and put PC in control 5-4 at the 13:01 mark. Jenn Peters, who led the Blackbirds with four goals on the day, recorded back-to-back scores to give LIU the lead with 7:15 on the clock. Lauren Schaaf knotted the game got her 10th goal of the season at the 4:40 mark and the teams went into the break with the game knotted at 6-6.
In the second half, the Blue Hose jumped ahead with early goals from Watters and Roberts. Following another Peters score, Stader answered to keep the lead at two, 9-7 with 16:45 remaining. The visitors stormed back with four unanswered, though, and LIU took an 11-9 lead at the 4:02 mark. Alexandra Cole got into the scorer’s column with 3:29 to play, but the Blackbirds scored with 1:20 to play and held on for the win.
LIU outshot PC (31-22), picked up more ground balls (31-22), and committed fewer turnovers (24-32). The Blue Hose recorded more saves (11-7) and held the edge in draw controls (15-8). PC converted 21-of-28 (75.0 percent) clears. The game featured five ties and as many lead changes.
The Blue Hose are back in action this Friday, March 10 as they take on Butler in a 4 p.m. ET game at Old Bailey Stadium.
