Kernersville, N.C. – The Presbyterian College men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished in 7th Place at the Big South Championships at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex on Friday. The finish is the highest for the men’s program at the Big South Championship and is tied for the highest (2016) for the women’s team. Standout performances from senior Sally Hart and junior William Wise propelled the Blue Hose to their best team performance at the Big South Championships.
Hart placed 19th in the 5k, finishing in 19:37. 19th place is the best finish for any Blue Hose, male or female, at the Big South Championship race. Junior Ali Bennett ran a 20:28, good for 33rd place. Freshman Julia Keen placed 51st with a time of 21:08 and was followed closely behind by junior Emily Swanigan who finished 55th at 21:20. Rounding out the scoring for PC was junior Denise Devaney who ran a 22:43, placing 75th. Also running for the Blue Hose were senior Ripley Fricano (78th) and sophomore Abigayle Winn (82nd), who finished with times of 23:07 and 28:50, respectively.
Wise set a new 8k PR at 27:49 on Friday, placing 26th in the race. Sophomore Neel Taber finished 45th, crossing the line at 28:34. Freshman Zack Kochert (51st), sophomore Banner Plumb (53rd), and senior Duncan Gotfredson (54th) all finished within 20 seconds of each other at 28:55, 29:05, and 29:15, respectively. The spread in the top five runners was only 86 seconds. Also racing for PC were freshmen Kiro Morkos (73rd), Kieran Schuetterle (74th), Luke Harmon (76th), and seniors Jake Birdsong (81st) and Alex Johnson (83rd).
Both the men’s and women’s teams set new bests in points at the Big South Championships. The women had a score of 209 points and the men’s score was 215 points. These races also mark the first time that either team has placed in front of four other schools in the Big South Championship, as they both did so on Friday.
High Point took home the women’s team title with a combined score of 23 points. The Panthers’ Famke Heist won the 5k with a time of 17:53. Campbell won the men’s team championship with a score of 27. Lawrence Kipkoech of Campbell finished 1st in the 8k with a time of 25:07.
The Blue Hose will next take part in the NCAA Division I Southeastern Regionals. Those races will take place at Winthrop University on Friday, November 9. The women’s team will be running a 6k that is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. The men’s team will take part in a 10k that is slated for a 12:00 p.m. start.
