Rock Hill, S.C. – Salina Virola recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 18 points and program-record 18 rebounds as the #9-seeded Presbyterian College women’s basketball team defeated #8 seed Winthrop 64-52 on Tuesday night at the Winthrop Coliseum. Trinity Johnson tied her collegiate-best with a game-high 24 points.
Scoring the Game
After a low scoring first quarter, PC used a 6-0 run to take a 13-6 lead at 6:26 of the second. Johnson hit the game’s first three at 4:40, and the Blue Hose would score four more threes before half, including a buzzer beater from Shamani Stafford, to take a 29-14 lead into halftime.
Early threes from Kacie Hall and Johnson as well as a three-point play from Virola gave PC a 20-point lead, 40-20, at 6:01 of the third quarter. Winthrop went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 44-31 at 1:59, but the Blue Hose replied with a 6-0 run, all from the free throw line, to grow the lead back to 52-33.
Courtney Hagaman made Winthrop’s only three of the game at 2:07 and converted four free throws with one minute remaining to cut the lead to 62-48, but it was not enough as PC held on for the 64-52 win.
Stats of the Game
PC made seven three-pointers, while Winthrop only made one. The Blue Hose sank 17-27 (.630) free throws compared to 9-13 (.692) for the Eagles. PC held a slight advantage from the floor, 38% to 34%, and in rebounds, 41-39.
Salina Virola recorded her ninth double-double of the season (18 pts, 18 rbs) and moved into 5th place in the PC record books for single season rebounds (255). She surpassed Marie Bolt (1987-88) and Rachel Sloan (2000-01).
PC is now 5-6 (.455) in Big South Tournament games.
Shamani Stafford moved into sole possession of 8th place in the PC record books for single season threes (69).
The 16 attempted free throws by Trinity Johnson tied her season-high and rank second in the PC DI era.

Presbyterian College improves to 7-23 overall, while Winthrop ends the season at 10-19.
The Blue Hose advance to play top-seeded Radford on Thursday, March 14, for a 6 pm game that will be carried on ESPN3.
