Clinton, S.C. – Cortney Storey scored 15 of her school record 30 points in the overtime frame and the Blue Hose defeated UNC Asheville 72-63 in an overtime thriller on Senior Night at the Templeton Center.

Storey was the only Blue Hose player in double figures as she finished with 30 points, six assists, three rebounds, three steals and one block. Six other players scored six to eight points led by Tess Santos and Salina Virola with eight each.
Stat of the Game
The Blue Hose finished 21-25 from the free throw line good for an 84.0 percent clip, the Bulldogs finished 12-19, a 63.2 percent clip.
Behind a quick start from Storey the Blue Hose jumped out to an early 12-7 lead at the first media timeout. UNC Asheville went on a 4-0 run to pull within one at 12-11 but the Blue Hose responded with a 4-0 run of their own to end the quarter. Erica Blackwell-Boyden made free throw followed by a lay-up and one play by Storey. Storey went for nine points in the first quarter breaking Mariah Piertrowski’s Division I era record of 1,293 points.
Presbyterian opened up a seven-point lead at 22-15 four minutes into the second period forcing an Asheville timeout. The Bulldogs got a three-pointer to make it 22-18 but PC answered with a 7-0 run to go up 11, its biggest lead of the half. Asheville ended the half on a 4-2 run and it was a 31-22 halftime lead for the Blue Hose.
Bree Fiztgerald scored the first six points of the half and 10 of 17 in the third quarter for the Bulldogs who pulled to within one point at 40-39 by the end of the period. A 13-2 Asheville run put the Bulldogs ahead 43-40 as they took their first lead of the game at 8:49 to play in the fourth.
Santos went on a personal 6-0 run to spark a Blue Hose 13-4 run giving PC a 53-47 lead. Asheville was not done as it had one last run in it, a 7-0 run to take a 54-53 lead. Storey made a 1-2 free throws with 57 seconds remaining to tie the game at 54, and no one scored in the remaining 57 seconds as the game went to overtime.
Storey started overtime with a three-pointer and steal for a fast break layup to put the Blue Hose ahead 59-54. The Bulldogs hit a three to make it 59-57 but Virola answered with a three on the other end. Those were the only three Blue Hose points in overtime not scored by Storey. Storey made a lay-up followed by going 6-6 from the free throw line down the stretch as PC won 72-63.
“I am so proud of our team for the way they responded to Saturday’s loss,” said coach Todd Steelman. “We were committed to the game plan, we worked together, and we did not give in when the game got tight down the stretch. Cortney (Storey) really showed just how great of a player she is in the fourth quarter and overtime. She was tremendous for us. It was a perfect way for our seniors to finish up their career at Templeton.”
For the Record
The Blue Hose move to 11-17 overall and 8-9 in Big South play. PC is tied-fifth in the Big South with Campbell and Gardner-Webb with one game left in the regular season. PC has won three of four as it heads to Charleston Southern on Saturday. UNC Asheville moves to 14-14 overall and 11-6 in Big South play.
This was game number 10 that the Blue Hose finished with 10+ in steals as they had 11 tonight.
Storey scored a school record 30 points breaking her own school Division I era record of 27 that she had achieved twice previously.
With nine first quarter points she became the Division I era all-time leading scorer. She now has 1,315 points. That makes her eighth in all-time PC history.
With three more steals she now has 220 for her career, that is three shy of Dria David’s 223 which is the Division I era record.
Santos finished with a career high four steals.
The Blue Hose wrap up the regular season on Saturday as they travel to Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers won the first meeting 64-61.
