HIGH POINT, N.C. - Presbyterian College's fantastic
freshman Mariah Pietrowski has been named Big South Conference Freshman of the
Year. The Elizabethton, Tenn. native
earns PC's first major postseason award since starting the transition to
Division I. The post player is joined on
the All-Freshman team by Dria David.
Junior Amanda Mills also claimed All-Big South Academic Team
Honors.
"It's a
great honor for both Mariah and Dria to be recognized among the top freshman
performers in the league this year," said head coach Ronny Fisher. "We've asked both of them to perform in roles
that freshmen are not normally asked to fill, but to their credit, they've
responded. Mariah has been our most consistent scorer
and very efficient with the ball inside.
She's really established herself as a go-to player for us. Dria has been called on to do a lot of things
for our team this season. She's led us
in rebounds, assists and steals while drawing the top defensive assignment on
most nights. It's also a great honor for
Amanda to earn All-Conference Academic honors. In a discipline such as Pre-Med/Biology, it's
really a credit to her to perform so well in the classroom and on the hardwood."
The award
for Pietrowski, voted upon by the league's coaches and media, comes on the
heels of four Big South Freshman of the Week accolades this season. The center scored 10.7 points per game in her
first year with the Blue Hose to lead the team in scoring. She shot .587 percent from the field on the
season, making 115 total baskets to go along with .611 percent shooting from
the free throw line. Pietrowski grabbed
4.6 rebounds per game to go with 13 blocks to rank second in both categories
for PC. She closes her initial campaign
with 299 total points in 28 games to rank 11th in scoring.
Dria David,
a Lawrenceville, Georgia native, secured All-Freshman team honors as well by
scoring 7.8 points per game and grabbing a team high 162 rebounds from her position in the backcourt. The guard also swiped 65 steals to lead the
team and rank fourth in the league. She
also ranked as the team's top passer with 127 assists. David was potent from the line, draining a team-high
84 free throws. Her scoring output of
233 points ranked her third on the team in scoring.
Oregon City,
Oregon native Amanda Mills captured Big South All-Conference Academic honors with
a 3.46 GPA to pace the Blue Hose in the classroom. The Junior has been named to the Dean's List
and is majoring in Biology. On the court,
Amanda scored 252 total points in her second season at PC to rank second in
scoring with 8.4 points per game. She
led the team in three-pointers with 48 baskets from downtown and 77 total from the
field. Mills also grabbed 27 steals and
shot 75 percent from the charity stripe.
