Presbyterian College women’s basketball coach Alaura Sharp announced the hiring of Mercedes Jorge as director of basketball operations on Friday.

Jorge comes to PC after two seasons as a graduate assistant at Georgia State. During the 2018-19 season, under new head coach Gene Hill, she contributed to the team’s turnaround that saw GSU record the most overall wins (17) since 2003-04 and the most Sun Belt Conference wins (11) since joining the league in 2013. The Panthers also ended the season with an appearance in the Women’s Basketball Invitational.

“I am extremely thankful to be adding Mercedes Jorge to our staff,” Coach Sharp said. “We are excited about the new position and feel like she is a great fit. She brings great energy and is motivated to learn and grow in the business. Mercedes will be a tremendous role model for our players and is a great addition to our PC family.”

A native of Orlando, Fla., Jorge played three seasons of basketball at Embry-Riddle after one season at Indian River State CC. She averaged double-digit scoring at Embry-Riddle and earned both an All-Academic and All-Conference selection from the Sun Conference. She started 79 career games and averaged +30.0 minutes per game all three seasons. Jorge was a talented rebounder as well, posting 8.1 per game during her time with the Eagles. She played her prep years at Lake Mary HS in Orlando, averaging 15 points and 10 boards per game as a senior, where she helped the Rams win four district titles and three conference titles.

“I am beyond excited to be joining the staff at PC,” Jorge said. “As soon as I stepped on campus, it already felt like home and everyone I meet makes me feel so welcomed. I am very grateful to Coach Sharp for believing in me and for giving me the opportunity to advance my coaching career, learn from her and this staff, as well as be a part of the awesome culture she has built at PC in such a short time. Her vision for this program and passion to positively impact those around her is something I truly believe in and can’t wait to be around every day. I’m looking forward to doing my part in helping us reach our goals.”
