SPARTANBURG, SC –The Presbyterian College baseball team dropped a 9-8 game to Wofford on Wednesday night after the Terriers rallied with four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Blue Hose fall to 13-34 overall, while the Terriers improve to 30-17 and won the season series against PC.
How It Happened
In the top of the second, Nick Wise homered to right field to give PC the early 1-0 lead. Wofford replied with four runs in the bottom of the inning on three hits and one error. The Terriers tied the game on back-to-back doubles from Cody Miller and Lawson Hill then took the lead on a single from Max McDougald. A throwing error and wild pitch scored two more runners and gave Wofford the 4-1 lead.
In the third, Jonathan White homered to left field to cut into the lead, 4-2. In the bottom of the inning, Wofford extended the lead back to three runs, 5-2, on a double from Andrew Orzel.
In the top of the fourth, Wise doubled and scored on a single from TJ Richardson. Three wild pitches from relief pitcher Ty Reginelli scored Richardson and made the score 5-4 in favor of Wofford.
In the top of the fifth, PC loaded the bases and tied the game on a wild pitch. A two-run single from Connor Slagill then gave PC the lead back at 7-5.
Wofford picked up the walk-off win with four runs and four hits in the bottom of the ninth. Mack Nathanson scored two with a double to left center, and Hill clenched the win with a double to right field.
Pitchers of Record
Grayson Stoneking (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits over 1.2 innings. He struck out one and walked one.
Matt Ellmyer (6-0) picked up the win after striking out one and forcing two fly outs in the top of the ninth inning.
The Blue Hose have hit 30 home runs over the last 21 games and have hit at least two home runs in 11 of the last 21 games. Nick Wise leads the team with nine on the year.
The Blue Hose will resume play after exam week at PC with a 4:00 pm game at Davidson on May 9.
