Clinton, S.C. – All it took was one pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning for senior Colton Chapman to hit a walk-off home run and give PC the 4-3 win over Longwood on Saturday at the PC Baseball Complex. The win also gives PC the series win and improves their record to 15-35 on the season and 8-15 in the Big South. Longwood falls to 15-34 on the year and 7-16 in Big South play.
How It Happened
In the top of the second inning, Mac McCafferty reached on a fielder’s choice to the pitcher. Singles from Antwuan Tucker and Eric Crain brought the run home and gave Longwood the 1-0 lead. Then, a sacrifice bunt from Joey Mendez and RBI single from Sammy Miller made it 3-0.
Starting pitchers Eric Miles and Cody Boydstun settled in for the next six innings, only allowing a combined six hits and striking out nine batters.
In the bottom of the eighth, Hunter Grover came in to pinch run for Michael Varga, who had drawn a leadoff walk. Nick Guimbarda then drew a two-out walk to advance Grover into scoring position. Then an RBI single from senior Jack McLaughlin and two-run double from senior AJ Priaulx tied the game at 3-3. Boydstun stayed in and recorded his eighth strike out of the day to end the inning.
Both bullpens continued the pitcher’s duel, allowing only two hits over the next two and a half innings. Colton Springs struck out four batters, all swinging, including sitting the Lancers down in order on 10 pitches in the top of the 11th inning.
In the bottom of the 11th, Chapman sent the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to give PC the walk-off win over Longwood, 4-3.
Pitchers of Record
Colton Springs (2-3) picked up his second win of the year after throwing 2.0 perfect innings and striking out four.
Michael Catlin (3-7) took the loss for Longwood, allowing one run on two hits over 2.0 innings. He struck out one and walked two batters.
This is PC’s second walk-off solo home run of the year. Tannor Byrd hit one against Liberty in an 8-7 victory on March 30.
Senior AJ Priaulx’s game-tying double in the bottom of the eighth moved him back into the lead of the Big South with 70 hits this season.
PC and Longwood will end the series with a 1 pm game on Sunday that will be Senior Day for the Blue Hose.
