Presbyterian College and head volleyball coach Korrinn Burgess announced the signing of defensive specialist/libero Emily Braxton (Willow Spring, N.C.), middle blocker Hannah Chapman (Healdsburg, Calif.), and setter/defensive specialist Abby Sparkman (Boise, Idaho) to National Letters of Intent to join the Blue Hose this fall. The three new signees join Paige Cairns, Gracie Davis, and Taylor James to form the 2019 signing class.

Emily Braxton – DS/L – 5-9 – Willow Spring, N.C. – William Peace University (Fuquay-Varina HS)

2018 (WPU): Named USA South Libero of the Year and USA South Second Team East Division … Earned USA South Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors … Played in 104 sets in 29 matches, collecting 558 digs (5.37 digs/set), 111 assists, 42 aces, and seven kills … Team was regular season co-conference champions with a 15-1 conference record, 24-6 overall.

High School: Played three seasons on varsity at Fuquay-Varina … Played outside hitter as a sophomore and junior and then moved to setter as a senior … Named Second Team All-Conference as a senior.

Club: Played three years for Triangle Volleyball Club national teams … Played outside hitter in first year and switched to defensive specialist/libero for the final two … Finished second at a national tournament in Philadelphia during second year … Named team captain during her third year.

Personal: Emily Meagen Braxton was born in Raleigh, N.C. to Donel and Terrie Braxton … Her mother, Terrie, was a tennis player at Mount Olive for two years … Volunteered with her volleyball team at Painting Hands of Hope and with mission work in Greensboro, N.C. … Chose PC because it felt like home … Intends to major in sport and exercise science and would like to become a sports psychologist.

Hannah Chapman – MB – 6-1 – Healdsburg, Calif. – San Diego Mesa College (Healdsburg HS)

2017-18 (SDMC): First Team All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference … Posted a team-high .350 hitting percentage … Led conference with 0.65 blocks/set … Named team captain and recipient of Coaches Award as a sophomore … Named most improved as a freshman … Team won PCAC-South and finished top-8 in state as a sophomore.

High School: Played four seasons on varsity as a middle blocker/outside hitter at Healdsburg … Named First Team All-Conference, Team MVP, and team captain as a senior … Earned Second Team All-League honors, was a recipient of the Coaches Award, and was named team captain during junior year … Team posted best record in school history during her sophomore season, reached the state championship, and took second in the North Coast section.

Club: Played for Empire Volleyball Club … Attended Junior National Championships twice, placing in the top-10 as a junior.

Personal: Hannah Taylor Chapman was born in Palm Springs, Calif., to Galand and Joanne Chapman … Chose PC because of the Pre-Med program and the high level of volleyball … Intends to major in Biology/Pre-Med and would like to become an emergency room doctor.

Abby Sparkman – S/DS – 5-9 – Boise, Idaho – Rocky Mountain HS

High School: Four-year varsity starter at Rocky Mountain … Played outside hitter/right-side hitter/defensive specialist as a freshman before moving to defensive specialist/libero … Collected 804 digs, 141 assists, 115 aces, and 24 kills in her final three seasons … Named to the SIC District 3 All-Star Team as a senior … Two-time SIC District 3 Honorable Mention … Team went 15-1 during the regular season during her sophomore year and won the District Tournament … Highest finish in the state tournament was fifth as a senior.

Club: Began playing club volleyball at age 11 … Played for five different clubs … Qualified for a USAV National Bid five times … Played with the Lonestar Volleyball Club in Dallas at age 18 … Earned a USAV National Bid with Idaho Crush Volleyball Club in Boise at 17 and with Boise Volleyball Club at 16 … Placed 10th at USAV Nationals with Idaho Crush at 15 … Played for Boise at age 13 and 14 … Earned a USAV National Bid with Idaho Stars Volleyball Club at 12 … Placed 13th at USAV Nationals with Tejas Volleyball Club from Dallas at 11.

Personal: Abigail ‘Abby’ Ann Sparkman was born in Dallas to Scott and Cat Sparkman … Her mother, Cat, played college softball for Southern Methodist … Served as an intern at her church this summer as part of the creative team … Chose PC because of the family and community atmosphere that has a balance of athletics and academics.
