Clinton, S.C. – Three members of the Presbyterian College men’s tennis team received Big South Postseason Honors, as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning. Max Benson was named the conference Freshman of the Year and was voted first team in singles. Oscar Alvarez earned second team honors in singles action. Daniel Stenger was named to the Big South All-Academic team. The pairing of Stenger and Alvarez was voted second team in doubles.


Benson is the first Blue Hose to be named Freshman of the Year since Diego Manzanas in 2014. He won 20 matches in 2019, 10 against Big South opponents. In singles play, Benson played matches on courts 1-3, picking up 11 wins. Nine of his victories came in just a pair of sets. He picked up seven of those 11 wins on court two. His six singles wins against conference foes tied him for the team lead. Benson finished the season with four straight wins in singles action.


Alvarez was 12-10 in singles action this year, steadily moving up in the rotation from the beginning of the season when he played on court six all the way up to court three for the final seven matches of the season. Seven of his wins came in straight sets. His six Big South wins tied him with Benson for most on the team. On courts three and four this season, Alvarez held an 8-3 record.


Alvarez and Stenger earned 10 wins on court one in doubles action this season, four coming against conference opponents. The duo was a mainstay on court one, playing each of their 20 matches there.


Stenger has 15 total wins on the season. He has played all but four of his matches on court one throughout the campaign. He has a 3.4 GPA and is majoring in Business Administration with a Management concentration and is minoring in Economics.


The Blue Hose will begin play at the Big South Championship on Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. when they take on host #5 Radford. Live stats for that match can be found here:
