CLINTON, S.C. – The reigning Big South Champion Presbyterian College men’s tennis team concluded its fall action earlier this month. PC participated in five events in the fall season in order to prepare for the upcoming 2018 season.

PC’s success this fall was highlighted by the strong play of Alejandro Bejar and Jaime Castillo-Lopez at the USC Upstate Spartan Invitational, as both came out on top in their respective draws. Bejar won four straight matches to win the Black Draw, while Castillo-Lopez did the same to win the Green Draw. Alexander Lykou also came out on top in the consolation bracket of the Black Draw.

Bejar opened the action with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over UNC Asheville’s Olly Cull, before a 6-2, 6-3 victory and a 6-2, 6-2 win over USC Upstate’s Luke Eble and Francisco Neto, respectively. He capped it off with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win in the finals over UNC Asheville’s Andrew Sinai.

Meanwhile, Castillo-Lopez recorded a 6-3, 6-4 over Belmont Abbey’s Zach Blythe and a three-set, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Upstate’s Fernando Bernardes to advance to the finals. He held off Upstate’s Ankush Arora in the final, 6-4, 7-6 (4), to take first in his draw. After dropping his first round match, Lykou recorded a pair of victories in straight sets over two PC teammates to take the consolation bracket.

At the Battle on the Beach, PC went head-to-head with Georgia Southern, Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina in dual matches. The Blue Hose split eight singles against the Eagles to highlight the weekend, while taking three of four doubles matches against the Chanticleers.

Lykou took two of three matches at the event to lead the Blue Hose, recording three-set wins over CCU’s Lawrence Perrin, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5), and GSU’s Diego Finkelstein, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Castillo-Lopez and Daniel Stenger also won two matches, topping GSU’s Finkelstein/Landin, 8-5, and CCU’s Boulay/Faria, 8-6.

Alberto Conde then won a pair of matches at the Liberty Invitational, topping Longwood’s Valentin Popescu, 7-6, 6-2, before defeating fellow Lancer Raisei Sakai in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.  Britton Bellamy recorded a three-set win over Liberty’s Max Borcuti, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, in singles action and teamed up with Elias Svensson for a 6-2 win in doubles action.

The Blue Hose traveled to the ITA Carolina Regional with four players competing in the event. Lykou won his first two matches, topping Big South foe Winthrop’s Josh Ryan, 6-3, 6-3, and Davidson’s Artem Khrapko, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.  Castillo-Lopez added a pair of singles victories in the back draw, recording a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8) victory over Winthrop’s Gabriel Dias and a 6-3, 6-3 win over Campbell’s Jonathan O’Neal.

PC wrapped up fall action with a trip to the Seahawk Fall Invite. PC took three doubles matches over UNCW, as Lykou and Brandon Mills won 6-2, Stenger and Castillo-Lopez won 6-2 and Bejar and Conde combined for a 6-4 victory. Mills also earned a singles win over USC Upstate’s Bernardes, 6-1, 6-2, in addition to a singles victory by Bejar, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, over UNCW’s Andres Torres.
