Winston-Salem, N.C.– Presbyterian College’s Clement Vannier scored in the 74th minute to cut No. 1 Wake Forest’s lead to 2-1, but the Demon Deacons pulled away with a pair of late goals to win 4-1 at Spry Stadium on Tuesday night. PC falls to 0-4 while Wake Forest improves to 4-0.
How It Happened
The first half was a physical affair with 15 fouls being called. Freshman Brison Moorhead picked up three saves on nine shots by the Deacs, while PC forced a pair of saves from Andreu Cases Mundet. In the 41st minute, Jakob Luedtke hit the far post with a free kick and nearly gave PC the lead.
Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute with a goal from Justin McMaster as he tucked his shot into the bottom left corner. Just three minutes later, Bruno Lapa struck a booming shot from 25 yards out to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Deacs would then pull away with a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes. Omir Fernadez finished a cross from Machop Chol in the 76th minute before Lapa scored his second of the night and fifth of the season in the 83rd minute to make it 4-1.
"I was very pleased with our first half performance as I have been many times this season," head coach Jonathan Potter said. "Wake Forest is a very good team and was able to open us up in the second half. We have to renew our focus on our team core values and regroup quickly for Furman this weekend."
Wake Forest outshot PC 23 to 8 but had a smaller edge in shots on goal, 10 to 4. The Deacs also led on corner kicks, 8-0.
Vannier led the team in goals (5) and points (12) a season ago and currently leads the team in both this season.
The Blue Hose will travel up I-385 to play Furman on Saturday, September 8, in a 7 p.m. game at Stone Stadium.
