Clinton, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Blue Hose (1-1-0) defeated the USC Upstate Spartans (0-3-0) by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday night at Martin Stadium. The win was the first for Blue Hose over the Spartans since 2013.
How it happened:
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead at the 10:01 mark of the match on Calon Minors free kick from just outside the box. Minors was fouled just outside the box, avoiding the penalty kick but still getting the free kick from roughly twenty yards out. The match was chippy from the beginning, that was evidenced by the three yellow cards given out in the second half.
Minor had a chance just seven minutes later to put the Spartans up by two goals not even twenty minutes into the contest but ended up hitting the post. PC would play stifling defense the remainder of the half and would get on the board themselves at the 40:11 mark. Freshman Andrew Miller-Bell took a long pass down the middle from fellow freshman Nemanja Zivanovic and was able to put the ball past the goal keeper of the Spartans.
The chippiness continued in the second half as the three yellow cards were given out but just 6:25 into the second half the Blue Hose would take their first lead of the season. Sergio Pinto was able to corral a blocked shot by Ricardo Hernandez and hit a liner from 18 yards out into the back of the net.
11 minutes later freshman Victor Menudier was able to take a corner kick from Adrian Edo Martin and head it past the goal keeper. The Blue Hose would play keep away for the remaining 28 minutes and goal keeper, Connor Behrend, was able to make some clutch plays that do not necessarily show up in the stat book off of corner kicks.
“Defensively we were a lot more solid,” said Coach Jonathan Potter. “The guys were working tremendously hard the past couple of days, training our defensive mentality. Tonight I am super proud of the guys coming back from a not so good performance (Saturday versus Davidson), to play, play well and win.”
