CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women’s lacrosse team opened conference play with an 18-8 loss to Liberty Saturday afternoon at Martin Stadium. The Blue Hose fall to 1-8 on the year and 0-1 in the Big South, while the Flames improve to 2-9 overall and 1-0.

Stat of the Game

Liberty outshot PC (40-27) and led in ground balls (30-25) and draw controls (19-9). The Flames just edged the Blue Hose in turnovers (22-23).

Blue Hose Players of the Game

Alexandra Cole and Ellie Stader scored two goals apiece to lead the Blue Hose on offense. Kayla Koch was just shy of her season high with eight ground balls. The freshman goalie totaled 14 saves on 32 shots faced for a 43.8 save percentage in a complete-game effort. Maura Talvacchia collected seven ground balls with five caused turnovers and a draw control.

Liberty Players of the Game

Liberty was paced by Brianna McCaffrey’s four goals, an assist, four ground balls, six draw controls, and a caused turnover. Abby Britton followed with a hat trick and a pair of draw controls. Goalie Katherine Widrick faced 19 shots, recording 11 saves for a 57.9 save percentage in 60 minutes of work. She added a game-high nine ground balls.

How It Happened

Claire Frase scored her second goal of the season at the 28:13 mark in the opening half to put PC on the board, but Liberty scored the equalizer less than a minute later. Kathleen Gerrits found the back of the neck to put the Blue Hose up 2-1 (26:52), but the Flames answered again five minutes later. Natalie Barnett got into the scorer’s column to make it 3-2 with 19:32 left in the first half, but it would be the last time PC saw the lead. The visitors scored five unanswered to jump ahead 7-3. Cole’s tenth goal of the year cut Liberty’s lead to 7-4 (11:09), but the Flames added a pair late for a 9-4 advantage at the break.

The Blue Hose struck first in the second half as Stader recorded her tenth of the season with 27:35 on the clock. PC couldn’t close the gap, however, as Liberty continued to score twice for every PC goal. Lauren Schaaf got her team-high 14th goal of the season to make it 11-6 (18:57), then assisted Stader’s second score to trail the Flames 13-7 (11:50). McCaffrey added to her total with three goals late, highlighting a 4-0 run by the guests. Cole and Liberty’s Hannah Quast then traded scores to wrap up the game.

Notables

- Cole has now scored in four straight games.

- Koch has recorded at least five ground balls or better in the last four games. She has also made double-digit saves for the fourth straight game.
