ROCK HILL, S.C. – Freshmen Ripley Fricano and Preston Meade led the Presbyterian College cross country teams with a set of school records on Friday evening at the Winthrop Early Season Challenge. The women finished a close fourth while the men finished third and defeated Gardner-Webb.
Fricano (Atlanta, Ga) surged after the first mile to pull away from teammates Sally Hart (Raleigh, NC) and Bea DiBona (Charleston, SC) on the 4k course. Fricano went on to finish 20th overall and led the team with a school record of 16:25. Hart and DiBona crossed in 16:47 and 16:52 respectively for 24th and 25th place. All three eclipsed the previous record of 17:17.
Hayley McCoy (Chapin, SC) finished in 30th (17:50) and Sarah Jennings (Lexington, SC) finished 32nd (17:59) to round out the top-five. Hydia Green (Union, SC) finished in 19:47, and Abby Waldron (Clinton, SC) finished in 21:09.
Clemson won the meet with a perfect score of 15 points and was led by junior Grace Barnett, the individual champion, in a time of 14:31. Winthrop finished second with 60 points, Gardner-Webb third (74) and PC fourth (100).
Meade (Alpharetta, Ga) held on in a competitive 6k race to set the school record at 20:13 while finishing 17th overall. On his heels, Duncan Gotfredson (Berkeley Lake, Ga) crossed in 20:22 for 19th place also eclipsing the five-year old record of 20:39.
Reid McCandless (Fort Mill, SC) was 26th in a time of 20:58. Alex Johnson (Lexington, SC) was 29th at 21:12 and Chris Sacco (Rock Hill, SC) was 33rd at 22:17 to round out the scoring five. Caleb Weathers (Woodruff, SC) finished in 23:52 and Jake Birdsong (Summerville, SC) crossed in 24:46.
Clemson nearly swept the meet with another perfect score, but won the men’s 6k race with a low score of 19 points. Sophomore James Quattlebaum won the event with a time of 18:47. Winthrop finished second with 51 points, PC third (78) and Gardner-Webb fourth (95).
This was the first race of the season for both teams. The Blue Hose will return to race on September 12 at the Furman Invitational.
