Freshman Gabriele Lesieur (Augusta, Ga.) anchored for the Blue Hose, running the 1600 meters in 5:56 and leaving runners from Mars Hill, Salem, and USC-Aiken in her wake. Three other freshmen also participated in the relay, each surpassing their best times from practice this spring. Jessica Hatchell (Darlington, S.C.) started the race, running a 1200 in 4:22. Grace Lifer (Darlington, S.C.) ran her 400-meter leg in 1:18 before Jennifer Lockman (Woodruff, S.C.) ran an 800 in 2:48 and handing off to Lesieur.
UNC-Pembroke won the women's DMR with a time of 13:09.19 ahead of Wofford (13:24.92) in second and Wingate (13:24.94) and third. PC finished fourth, ahead of USC-Aiken (14:28), Salem (14:38), and Mars Hill (15:02).
The men also fielded a young team, with three sophomores during the first three legs and a freshman as their anchor. Ryan Wasilewski (Easley, S.C.) ran the men's 1200 in 3:35 and handed off to Kevin Quan (Greenwood, S.C.) for the 400. Quan covered his lap in 58 seconds. Richard Taylor (Spartanburg, S.C.) then ran his 800-meter leg in 2:12 and put the baton in the hands of Jordan Huffstetler (Orangeburg, S.C.) for the remaining 1600 meters. The freshman ran 5:02 and stopped the clock for the team in 11:47 for 6th place.
Mars Hill's "A" team won the men's DMR with a time of 10:34. SMC finished second (10:43), Wingate third (11:00), Mars Hill's "B" team fourth (11:09), Wofford fifth (11:13), and PC sixth (11:47).
"I was happy to give the team an opportunity for spring competition this year," said Coach Thad Palmer after the race. "After a good spring of practices, we ran our fastest today and will use this success as motivation during our upcoming summer training."
This was the only track meet for the Blue Hose this spring and first in four years. The cross country team will return to action next fall.
