Clinton, S.C. – The Blue Hose held High Point scoreless over the final 6:57 of game time as PC finished on a 9-0 run and won 62-55 Saturday afternoon at the Templeton Center. Cortney Storey led the way with a game high 26 points while Kacie Hall with 12 and Janie Miles, 10 were also in double figures.
Player of the Game
Storey recorded her third game this season with 25-plus and eighth of 20-plus points with a game high 26 points. She added three assists, two rebounds and one steal. Hall had 12 points, a career high tying six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Miles had 10 points and eight rebounds in the contest.
Stat of the Game
Presbyterian shot 48.0 (24-50) percent for the game while holding the Panthers to a 33.8 (23-68) percent. The 48.0 percent is its second best this season and best since shooting 49.0 percent at Upstate.
High Point jumped out to a 12-4 lead before PC hit its first three-pointer of the game. The Panthers had a decided rebound advantage in the first quarter of 12-5 helping to gain a lead of 16-8 after one period. Storey sparked a 20-point second quarter rally as PC forced HPU into six second quarter turnovers which helped lead the Blue Hose to a 20-11 second period advantage. PC made some impressive passes down the lane for fast break lay-ups and five different players helped record the six assists for PC. Storey’s three at the end of the half gave PC its first lead of the game, 28-27 at the half.
Storey scored the first four points the third period and gave her a personal 7-0 run dating back to the second quarter. High Point won the period by one point, 23-22 to make it a tie game 50-50. The Blue Hose led by as many as six on multiple occasions, last at 48-42 but High Point finished the quarter on an 8-2 run.
Miles hit a three to open the fourth but High Point responded with a 5-0 run to take a lead at 55-53 with 6:57 to play in the game. The Blue Hose got a fast break lay-up from Hall off a steal by Storey and tied the game at 55-55 with just over five minutes to play. PC finished the game on a 9-0 run and held High Point scoreless for nearly the last seven minutes of the game in winning 62-55.
“I am so proud of the way our team responded today,” said coach Todd Steelman. “We made some defensive adjustments that made it more difficult for High Point to get shots and that was huge for us. Cortney (Storey) had a tremendous game, but it was a total team effort. We will need more of that as we head down the stretch.”
For the Record
PC improves to 9-16 overall and 6-8 in the Big South while High Point drops to 15-10 overall and 9-5 in the Big South.
PC shot 48.0 percent (24-50), its second highest percentage of the season and best since shooting 49.0 percent at Upstate (11/15).
The Blue Hose won their second game when scoring less than 65 points.
Storey scored 26 points, her most since scoring 26 vs North Carolina Central. This was her third 25-plus point effort this season and eighth 20-plus point effort of the season.
Hall finished with a career high tying six rebounds.
Miles finished with a team high eight rebounds, her fourth game this season with eight or more.
The Blue Hose travel to Gardner-Webb on Tuesday night in search of the season sweep of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, they won the first meeting 72-69 in the Templeton Center.
