BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Presbyterian College women’s basketball team suffered a 51-40 setback to Gardner-Webb Tuesday night at Paul Porter Arena. PC pulled down 17 offensive rebounds in the game. The Blue Hose outscored the Bulldogs 22-6 in the fourth, with their rally falling just short.
The Blue Hose went to 14-10, 10-5 in the Big South Conference, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs improved to 17-9, 11-5 on the season. PC returns home to host Campbell 2 p.m. Saturday at the Templeton Center.
Taylor Petty (Spartanburg, S.C.) led the Blue Hose with 14 points and pulled down two rebounds, while Aianna Kelly (Newport News, Va.) poured in eight points and three rebounds. Rebecca Walker (Snellville, Ga.) led the Blue Hose with eight rebounds and two blocks.
Olivia Parker produced a double-double for Gardner-Webb with 15 points, 11 rebounds and added three blocks. Alexus Hill produced 13 points, two rebounds and two assists.
Gardner-Webb started the game on a 5-0 run before Kelly knocked down a jumper for PC. Petty knocked down a three-pointer and cut the Runnin’ Bulldogs lead to 6-5 with 2:32 left in the first period. Gardner-Webb ended the first quarter on a 4-0 run and held a 10-5 lead after the first.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs opened the second quarter on a 7-3 run before Allie Wagner (Easley, S.C.) converted back-to-back layups and cut the lead to 17-12. The Blue Hose ended the quarter on a 4-0 run and cut the Gardner-Webb lead to 20-16 at halftime.
Petty converted free throws at the 6:07 mark of the third quarter and cut the GWU lead to 30-18. The Runnin’ Bulldogs ended the period on a 15-0 run to take a 45-18 lead.
The Blue Hose opened the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run and cut the Runnin’ Bulldogs lead to 47-27 with 7:14 remaining in the game. PC then ended the game on a 13-0 run, outscoring GWU 22-6 in the fourth, to make it an 11-point game at the end.
The Blue Hose held Gardner-Webb to 39.6 percent (19-of-48) shooting from the floor.
