CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women’s basketball team overcame a first-half deficit and topped Gardner-Webb, 60-53, on Saturday night at the Templeton Center. With the win, PC moved into sole possession of third place in the Big South Conference.
The Blue Hose improved to 12-8, 8-3 in the Big South, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs went to 13-8, 7-4 on the season. PC stays home and hosts Longwood at 7 p.m. on Monday at the Templeton Center.
Taylor Petty (Spartanburg, S.C.) tied the game-high with 16 points and added four rebounds for the Blue Hose, while Janie Miles (Clemson, S.C.) knocked down 15 points and led the team with three steals.
Candace Brown provided Gardner-Webb with 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Tierra Huntsman provided 14 points and two assists.
PC opened the game with a 5-2 run before Huntsman tied the game for Gardner-Webb with a three-pointer. The Runnin’ Bulldogs then went on a 6-0 run and took an 11-5 lead, their largest of the game. Gardner-Webb held a 15-9 advantage after the first quarter.
The Blue Hose trailed 19-13 before Petty sank two free throws then converted a layup. Aianna Kelly (Newport News, Va.) connected on a three-pointer and pulled PC within one at 21-20. Allie Wagner (Easley, S.C.) provided the Blue Hose with a layup and a free throw and tied the game at 23-23. Celia Tibbs ended the first half with a made layup and gave the Runnin’ Bulldogs a 25-23 lead into the locker room.
Miles started the second half with a made three-pointer and gave the Blue Hose a 26-25 lead, their first since the first quarter. Gardner-Webb responded with a 5-0 run before Miles converted a layup and Petty sank a three-pointer and held PC within one. PC then went on a 7-0 run before Tibbs ended the third period with a layup. The Blue Hose held a 38-34 lead after the third quarter.
Petty led off the final quarter with a three-pointer before Tibbs scored two-straight baskets. The Blue Hose went on a 7-0 run and Miles gave PC its largest lead of the game a 47-37 with 6:29 remaining in the game. The Runnin’ Bulldogs went on a 6-2 run and closed the gap to 49-43. Brown converted two free throws and got Gardner-Webb within four at 52-48. The two teams traded buckets until Brown sank a three-pointer and pulled GWU to a possession at 56-53. The Blue Hose closed the game with two free throws and a layup for the 60-63 victory.
It was the first win for the Blue Hose this season after trailing at half.
They are back in action on Monday when they play host to Longwood at 7 p.m. in the Templeton Center.
