The Presbyterian College men’s basketball team, behind a career-high 15 points from Janeil Jenkins, got to within three of the Chanticleers with under a minute to play, but a game-tying three-pointer fell just short, as Coastal Carolina took the 69-66 win in Big South action Wednesday evening at Templeton Center in Clinton, S.C.

PC, which drops to 8-14 overall and 3-8 in the Big South, head up the road to Gardner-Webb Saturday, Feb. 6, in a 4:30 p.m., game. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3. Coastal Carolina improves to 14-8, 8-4.

Trailing 5-2 in the early stages of the game, the Blue Hose, sparked by a DeSean Murray lay-up, scored nine straight to take a six-point, 11-5, lead with 13:19 on the clock. It proved to be short-lived as Coastal used a 14-3 run, to retake the lead, building it to 19-14, 9:34 to go before the break.

The Blue Hose cut the margin to just one, 24-23, off a Darius Moore jumper with 5:25 on the clock, but a basket and free throw by Tristian Curtis put the Chanticleers up by four less than a minute later.

Reggie Dillard’s lay-up at the 3:06 mark made it a three-point game, but it was all Coastal the final three minutes as the visitors scored the final six points to take a 36-27 lead into the locker room.

The Chanticleers continued with the hot hand, building a 10-point, 43-33, lead three minutes into the second half.

After two free throws by Murray helped the Blue Hose cut the lead to seven with 13:55 left, Coastal’s Jaylen Shaw made it a 10-point game again with a three-pointers two minutes later.

The Chanticleers led by as much as 12 midway through the half, including at 54-42, 9:19 on the clock. Will Adams, with his second three-pointer of the night, cut the margin to six, with another three, this one from Jaron Withers less than 20 seconds later, cutting the CCU lead in half, 54-48, 8:34 to go.

After two free throws by Withers two minutes later cut the margin to four, Ron Trapps hit a jumper, while Shivaughn Wiggins added a three to give CCU an eight-point lead, 5:38 to go.

Trailing by seven with four to play, Jenkins, eclipsed his career mark with a basket at 3:31 to make it a five-point game, 62-57.

CCU would go up by eight with 2:46 to play before two Jenkins’ free throws and a basket by Murray suddenly made it a four-point contest, 65-61, 1:33 to play.

Withers would make it a three-point margin with a layup just six seconds to play but a three-point attempt by Reggie Dillard, as time expired, fell just short as Coastal would survive for the 69-66 win.

Pacing the Blue Hose, who shot 42.3% from the field, was Jenkins with his career-high 15 points, followed by Murray who pulled down a team-leading five rebounds. Wiggins led CCU with 24 points, followed by Badou Diagne with his 12 on the night. Colton Ray-St. Cyr posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The Chanticleers shot 45.7% from the field and hit 21-of-33 free throws, compared to 15-of-20 for PC.

The Blue Hose connected on seven three-pointers, one more than Coastal, marking the first game since Jan. 6, PC has had more threes than the opponent.

PC posted 10 turnovers, four less than CCU, with the Chanticleers posting a 36-23 advantage on the boards.
