DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team used a two-run double by TJ Richardson in the seventh inning to pull in front of Davidson en route to the 8-6 victory on Tuesday night at Wilson Field in Davidson, N.C. The Blue Hose improve to 24-23 overall, while Davidson drops to 22-20 overall.
How It Happened
PC opened the game with two runs in the first to take an early lead. Glen Casaceli drew a leadoff walk to start the inning but a double play made it two outs and nobody on. TJ Richardson followed with a walk and AJ Priaulx put PC in front with a two-run home run to left center, his fifth of the season, to make it 2-0.
Davidson responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, before plating two more in the second. With two on and one out in the first, Brian Fortier doubled down the left field line to score two and three batters later, Brett Centracchio singled to center to score Fortier to make it a 3-2 game. In the second, Alex Fedje-Johnson reached on a leadoff single and two batters later Will Robertson homered down the left field line to give the Wildcats a 5-2 lead.
PC evened the game up with three-run third inning. Casaceli got the inning started with a solo home run to left, the first of his career, to pull PC within two runs. Brett Auckland followed with a single through the right side, extending his hitting streak to 12 games, the longest by a PC player this season. Richardson would single to left and moved to second on the throw, putting runners at the corners with no outs. After a strikeout, Connor Slagill singled to left to drive in Auckland and a batter later Richardson came home on an error, tying the game at 5-5.
Davidson reclaimed the lead with a run in the fifth. Alec Acosta led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Fortier then singled to left to drive him in and give Davidson a 6-5 lead.
The Blue Hose regained the lead with two runs in the seventh, before adding to the lead with a run in the eighth. Nick Guimbarda led off the seventh with a walk and Casaceli followed with a bunt single to put two aboard. A groundout put both runners in scoring position for Richardson, who doubled down the left field line to score both and make it a 7-6 PC advantage. In the eighth, Guimbarda reached on an error with two outs, reaching second on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder. Casaceli then singled for his third hit of the game to drive in Guimbarda and extend the lead to 8-6.
Pitchers of Record
Ryan Hall (1-0) earned his first win of the season, retiring four of the five batters he faced in 1.1 innings of work, allowing one walk against one strikeout.
Andrew Ashur (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on a hit and a walk in 0.1 inning of work out of the bullpen.
Ryan Hedrick picked up his eighth save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, recording a strikeout in the lone inning of work.
Player of the Game
Glen Casaceli put together a big night at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run, two walks, two runs and two RBIs. The senior hit his first career home run, a solo long ball in the third inning. He reached base in all five plate appearances out of the leadoff spot and pushed his season average to .313 on the year.
- TJ Richardson also put together a big evening at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs and two RBIs. The delivered the go-ahead runs with a two-RBI double in the seventh inning to put PC in front 7-6 at the time.
- AJ Priaulx hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season to get PC on the board in the first inning. The lefty has now matched his season home run total from a year ago, giving him 10 in two seasons at PC.
PC returns home for the final time in 2017, hosting USC Upstate at 3 p.m. at the PC Baseball Complex.
