FARMVILLE, Va. – The Presbyterian College baseball team evened its weekend series against Longwood on Saturday with a 6-5 win at Bolding Stadium in the second game of the Big South Conference set.

PC improves to 14-27-1 and 6-14 in the Big South while Longwood falls to 18-25 and 7-13 in League play. The two teams meet on Sunday in the rubber match at 1 p.m.

The Blue Hose answered an early Longwood lead with five runs over the second and fourth innings before withstanding a ninth-inning Lancers rally for the win.

Chandler Knox (Columbia, S.C.) pitched 5.2 innings and earned the win to move to a team-leading 6-5 record. The senior fanned five and allowed three runs in the start. Ethan Wortkoetter (Greer, S.C.) pitched 3.1 innings of relief, allowing only two runs in the final inning for his fourth save of the season.

Brandon Vick took the loss after six runs in six innings (three earned) to move to 4-5.

Weston Jackson (Greer, S.C.) went 3-for-5 to lead PC and was one of six Blue Hose to drive in a run on the afternoon.

Longwood jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Lancers pieced tougher four hits and used RBI base knocks from Kyri Washington, Alex Owens and Alex Lewis to put the Blue Hose in a quick 3-0 hole.

The Lancers’ lead would prove short-lived, however, as PC responded immediately with three of its own. Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) led off to bring up Jackson, who doubled to left field to score Paul. A Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) double plated Jackson and the junior infielder stole third to set up a run-scoring error during Derek Long’s (Alpharetta, Ga.) at-bat to tie the game at 3-3.

The Blue Hose tagged Longwood again in the fourth for a pair of scores. Glen Casaceli (Jupiter, Fla.) poked a leadoff single to right center for one of his two hits on the day before another error moved him to second. A double steal put the runners on second and third for a Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) sacrifice fly that gave PC the lead. Nate Chong (Duluth, Ga.) then singled to left to add another run for a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) laced an RBI single up the middle in the top of the six to score Chong for an unearned run and give PC three runs of breathing room, 6-3.

Wortkoetter shut down the Lancers for two innings and keep the 6-3 lead heading into the final inning. A one-out double put a runner on for Owens, who knocked a two-out RBI double to right center to make it a 6-4 game. Lewis then singled to dirve in another run and cut PC’s lead to just one, 6-5. The Blue Hose would prevail, however, as Wortkoetter induced a game-ending groundout to seal the win.

PC did not commit an error in the victory.
