CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team used a pitching gem in the first game and a steady attack at the plate in the second game to sweep the visiting UNC Asheville Bulldogs in a Saturday doubleheader at the PC Baseball Complex, 7-0 and 9-6.

PC ends the day at 10-9-1 and 3-0 in the Big South. The Blue Hose next head to Georgia for a Tuesday night tilt at 6 p.m. UNC Asheville falls to 4-14, 0-3 in the Big South and next play at Furman on Tuesday.

Chandler Knox (Columbia, S.C.) threw a sterling game in the opener, shutting out the Bulldogs in seven innings of work to improve to 4-1. The senior fanned nine and scattered five hits while issuing zero walks and hitting no batters. Freshman Ethan Wortkoetter (Greer, S.C.) earned his first collegiate win in five relief innings in the second game—after also pitching in the first— improve to 1-1.

Weston Jackson (Greer, S.C.) and Nathan Chong (Duluth, Ga.) each went 4-for-7 on the day and Chong crossed the plate five times and hit a home run in the day’s first game.

PC 7, UNC Asheville 0 (Game One)

The Blue Hose scored all of their runs in the first five innings and the team’s pitching and defense did the rest to win 7-0. Each team posted six hits in the game.

Chong kicked off the game with a leadoff walk and Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) blooped a single to shallow left field to put runners on the corners for Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.), who drew another walk after falling behind 0-2. Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) stepped into the batter’s box with the bases full and poked a fielder’s choice to short that scored Chong and put PC ahead, 1-0. A sacrifice fly plated another and PC led after one, 2-0.

PC put Chong and Motroni on to start the third as well and a balk by new pitcher Evan Joura moved the pair to second and third with one away. PC eventually loaded the bases and a passed ball brought Chong home to make it 3-0 after three innings.

Shortstop Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) made all three outs to retire Asheville in the fourth. The junior made tough snags and throws to Zebedis for the first and third outs and grabbed a screaming line drive for the second.

Chong made it 5-0 in the fourth inning when the senior turned on a pitch and lifted it over the left field wall, his first dinger of the season.

One inning later, Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) delivered a two-run home run of his own by finding the same spot Chong for his first of 2014. PC led 7-0 after the play.

Knox continued to cruise through the sixth, striking out the side to keep the Bulldogs scoreless.

From there, Wortkoetter pitched a scoreless eighth—fanning two—and Hayden Deal (Newton, N.C.) pitched a perfect ninth to finish the game.

PC 9, UNC Asheville 6 (Game Two)

PC dug out of an early hole by scoring in each of the first six innings and taking advantage of Asheville miscues to complete the series sweep in game two.

Asheville struck first to start game two as Robert McIntosh smacked a two-run double to left center that put the visitors ahead early, 2-0. An error allowed another run to score before Asheville posted its fourth of the inning to go up 4-0.

PC took one of the runs back in the bottom of the frame when McRae lifted a ball that caromed off the left field wall for a two-out RBI double.

In the second, PC loaded the bases with one away for Tyler Weyenberg (Marietta, Ga.). The freshman popped a bloop single to shallow left field that scored a run but the Bulldogs caught a runner at third for the second out.

The Blue Hose continued to chip away at the lead. Facing an 0-2 count with two away, Weston Jackson (Greer, S.C.) went to the opposite field for an RBI double that cut the gap to just one run in the third, 4-3.

A fielder’s choice with runners on the corners gave Asheville a 5-3 lead in top of the fourth off of new pitcher Trey Hayes (Belton, S.C.).

PC posted a run for the fourth straight inning in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, a Chong single gave the Blue Hose options at first and third. Zebedis then poked a single through the middle to score Weyenberg and pull PC back to within one, 5-4.

PC’s scoring trend tied the game in the fifth inning, again with two outs. Jackson stole third and Lizanich laid down a picture-perfect bunt down the line to score the sophomore and tie up the game, 5-5.

Two errors helped Asheville get a runner in scoring position with two out in the sixth. Designated hitter Pete Guy cashed in on a single to right and the Bulldogs went back ahead, 6-5.

Asheville then committed four errors in the bottom of the inning as PC jumped back ahead. Chong reached on an error and stole second before a two-error play on the Bulldogs allowed Chong to score and McRae to take third. Weston Jackson took advantage with another opposite field RBI single to put PC back in front, 7-6.

With Midkiff at the plate next, Jackson took off to second on the payoff pitch. Midkiff hit a slow chopper to short and the throw sailed past first base, bringing Jackson home for a two-run lead, 8-6.

Two straight wild pitches allowed PC to tack on another run in the eighth, 9-6. Pinch runner Robert Moss (Jupiter, Fla.) took two bases on the errant pitches for the final insurance run as Wortkoetter shut down the Bulldogs.

Starter Brian Kehner (Marietta, Ga.) threw three innings before Hayes pitched a scoreless fourth. Wortkoetter produced one of the best outings of his young career out of the bullpen, allowing only one run—unearned—in five innings of work while striking out five.
