PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Presbyterian College baseball team capped its trip to the Snowbird Baseball Classic with a pair of wins over Northeastern, 4-3, and Maine, 12-5, on Saturday in Port Charlotte, Fla.

PC ends the day at 7-7-1 and returns home to host Pitt in a two-game midweek series. The two teams play in Greenville on Tuesday at Fluor Field at 7 p.m. before meeting in Clinton on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

PC 4, Northeastern 3

PC used a solid morning at the plate and mound to take the first game of the day against Northeastern (4-8), 4-3.

Freshman outfielder Tyler Weyenberg (Marietta, Ga.) tallied a career-high 3-for-4 to lead PC at the plate. Designated Cam McRae (D Arlington, S.C.) tallied two RBI, along with Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.), who picked up one apiece.

Bennett Nalley (Greenville, S.C.) earned his first career win by pitching 2.2 innings of one-run, two-hit relief after a solid 4.1 inning start for Aaron Lesiak (Mauldin, S.C.), his collegiate first. Chandler Knox (Columbia, S.C.) closed out the game in the ninth inning and received the save.

PC scored first and posted three runs during the sixth and seventh innings en route to the win.

The Blue Hose drew first blood with a run in the first inning. Weyenberg singled from the leadoff spot and took second on a Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) sacrifice bunt. A Zebedis double brought the leftfielder home from second and PC led, 1-0.

Lesiak worked out of trouble in the third and fourth by forcing pop flies with runners on second and third. Northeastern eventually broke through in the fifth, using a leadoff triple to set up an RBI single and sacrifice fly. Nalley entered one out into the inning and struck out the final two batters to end the frame.

PC tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. With two away, McRae and Paul delivered singles to set up a Martin infield single that brought home McRae to pull the Blue Hose even with the Huskies, 2-2.

After Northeastern re-took the lead on a sacrifice fly in the second, PC scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the win. Derek Long (Alpharetta, Ga.) reached on an error and Weyenberg moved the catcher over to third on a single before taking second himself on a wild pitch. The Huskies intentionally walked Zebedis to load the bases and bring up McRae, who smashed a pitch off of the third base bag to score a pair and put PC back in front.

From there, Paul Sanders (St. Simons Island, Ga.) pitched a shutout eighth and Knox threw a hitless ninth to win the game for the Blue Hose, 4-3.

PC 12, Maine 5

The Blue Hose took advantage of five Maine (3-10) miscues for a 12-5 win to sweep the day.

Chandler Knox (Columbia, S.C.) moved to 3-1 on the season with a strong six innings. The senior allowed only five hits and two runs (one earned) to give PC the victory. The PC bullpen also allowed zero earned runs over the final three innings on only three hits.

Zebedis delivered four RBI on a 2-for-5 game, one of four Blue Hose to tally two hits against the Black Bears.

PC struck early with runs in the first and second innings. A leadoff walk from Weyenberg turned into an error that sent him to third for a Lizanich sacrifice fly in the opening frame before Brandon Martin scored in the second inning thanks to a failed pickoff attempt and PC led, 2-0.

Maine used a pair of singles in the third to cut PC’s lead in half, 2-1. A sacrifice bunt put the runner into scoring position and the Black Bears cashed in.

Four PC hits and an error helped doom the Black Bears as PC notched six runs in the fourth inning. McRae drew a leadoff walk before Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) singled. An error allowed McRae to score and put Martin at first. A Midkiff sacrifice fly added another run to PC’s column before Long ripped a single to score Martin.

Weyenberg brought in another run before Zebedis capped the scoring on a two-out double that plated Lizanich and Weyenberg for an 8-1 lead after four innings.

Knox continued to force fly outs to keep the Black Bears behind. PC extended its lead by two in the top of the sixth inning, as a Maine error and catcher’s interference put the first two runners aboard. Both came home on another Zebedis single for a 10-1 advantage.

Maine converted a sacrifice fly after a single and hit-by-pitch to take one run back in the sxith, but PC answered with two in the seventh. Two opening singles from Martin and Midkiff brought up Motroni, who took a pitch off the body to load the bases. Long cashed in, singling to plate a pair to cap PC’s scoring for the day at 12 runs.

The Black Bears scored three runs in the eighth, all unearned by way of a pair of errors. Patrick Coughlin scored two runs with a two-out double after the first came on an error.

Motroni moved from second to pitch the final inning and the junior shut down the Black Bears, forcing three straight groundouts to put a stamp on the win.

Robert Moss (Jupiter, Fla.) made his collegiate debut on the mound in relief. The freshman pitched two-thirds of the eighth inning, but none counted as earned. Trey Hayes (Belton, S.C.) threw a scoreless seventh and Michael Trebendis (Fayetteville, Ga.) pulled PC out of the jam in the eighth by inducing a pop fly on the only batter he faced.
