SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Another strong pitching outing and an early offensive explosion helped the Presbyterian College baseball team knock off Fordham in Spartanburg on Saturday afternoon, 9-3.

PC improves to 4-1-1 and rounds out the weekend at Wofford on Sunday at 4 p.m. Fordham falls to 0-2 with the loss.

The Blue Hose scored four runs in the first inning and another four in the third en route to the win. Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) posted a game-high three hits while Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.), Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) and Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) contributed two RBI apiece.

Chandler Knox (Columbia, S.C.) kept up his start to the year for a 2-0 record. The senior threw six innings of five-hit, three-run (two earned) ball. Knox also struck out three and walked nobody for the victory.

PC jumped all over starter Tim Swatek to start the game, scoring four runs on seven hits in the opening inning. Lizanich singled with one out to bring up Zebedis, who launched a towering home run to left centerfield. A Paul single an error put two aboard for Jacob Midkiff (Rock Hill, S.C.) and the infielder knocked a single to right to score Paul and make it a 3-0 game. Cam McRae then singled up the middle to score Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) for a 4-0 lead.

Two innings later, the Blue Hose struck again. This time, McRae went yard for a solo shot to left field with one away. Derek Long (Alpharetta, Ga.) poked a single to left center and eventually came home on a Lizanch RBI. With two aboard following a pair of walks, Paul plated two thanks to a single and centerfield error that put PC ahead, 8-0.

Fordham scored an unearned run in the fourth to cut into PC’s lead with an RBI. A runner reached third on an error but the Blue Hose clamped down and limited the damage to the lone score.

PC took the run back in the bottom of the frame. Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) knocked a double down the right field line and eventually came around with the heads-up skills of stealing third and scoring on a wild pitch.

The Rams scored one on a leadoff home run in the fifth and added another via RBI groundout in the sixth. Those would be the only runs PC would allow as the bullpen shut Fordham down through the final three innings.

Redshirt freshman Bennett Nalley (Greenville, S.C.) made his PC debut and struck out one before Michael Trebendis (Fayetteville, Ga.) struck out another in a perfect eighth. For the ninth, Motroni moved from second base to the mound and fanned one to keep PC in front by six, 9-3.
