SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team used a pitching gem from Beau Dees (Blenheim, S.C.) to start off its weekend with a quality win over USC Upstate on Friday night at Harley Park, 5-1.

PC improves to 3-1-1 and will play at USC Upstate against Fordham on Saturday at noon. USC Upstate falls to 3-3.

Dees delivered a sterling performance in seven innings of work to move to 2-0 on the year. The junior did not allow a single run, limiting Upstate to only four hits while striking out eight with one walk. Freshman Ethan Wortkoetter (Greer, S.C.) also earned his first career save for a perfect 1.1 innings to seal the victory.

Offensively, Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) led PC with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, as did Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) by going 3-for-5. Nathan Chong (Duluth, Ga.) also drove in two RBI to pace the Blue Hose in that category.

All five of PC’s runs came with two outs in the inning.

PC wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, using a pair of two-out hits to draw first blood. Zebedis ripped a double to centerfield and Paul laced a smash past third base to score the senior and put the Blue Hose ahead, 1-0.

Dees held Upstate at bay through the early going. The junior fanned two in the first inning—with another out coming on a spectacular grab by Jacob Midkiff (Rock Hill, S.C.) at third base—and struck out three in the second inning. All of that frame’s strikeouts came looking as Dees racked up five strikeouts in the first six outs.

The junior lefty struck out one batter each in the third and fourth to keep the Spartans scoreless.

PC threatened again in the top of the sixth. Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) beat out an infield hit to short and stole second base. Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) drew a walk and a Derek Long (Alpharetta, Ga.) groundout moved the runners into scoring position with two outs, bringing Chong to the plate. The senior centerfielder delivered, knocking a single through the left side to score two and extend PC’s lead, 3-0.

The Blue Hose struck again in the top of the eighth in another two-out situation. With Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) at third base, Long golfed a 1-2 pitch into left field to give PC four runs of breathing room through seven and a half innings, 4-0.

USC Upstate picked up its first run of the game in the bottom of the eighth. New pitcher Paul Sanders (St. Simons Island, Ga.) secured two outs but a single through the left side plated one to cut PC’s lead to three. Freshman reliever Ethan Wortkoetter entered the game and induced a pop fly to get PC out of the jam.

The Blue Hose made up for the run with one of their own in the top of the ninth. Zebedis beat out an infield single with one out and moved to second on a groundout, setting up a blooper from Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) that made the score 5-1 in favor of the visitors.

Wortkoetter and the PC defense took in from there, with a strikeout and two pop flies to give PC the win.
