CLINTON, S.C. – A pitching gem from junior Chandler Knox (Columbia, S.C.) and three RBI from Nate Chong (Duluth, Ga.) lifted the Presbyterian College baseball team to a win over Longwood in the team’s final home game of 2013 on Sunday, 4-0.

PC moves to 24-28 on the year and 10-11 in the Big South while Longwood falls to 24-25 and 12-12 in league play. The Blue Hose next face No. 12 South Carolina in Columbia on Tuesday at 7 p.m. while Longwood plays Old Dominion on the road Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Knox delivered a game to remember on Sunday, helping PC to its first shutout since his 5-0 blanking of NC Central on February 24. The righthander allowed only four hits—the only four baserunners for the Lancers—and fanned seven over eight innings. Knox issued no walks and did not hit any batter with a pitch to improve to 5-5 and pick up his third victory in his last four starts. Michael Ricchi (McKinney, Texas) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to seal the win for the Blue Hose.

PC scored two runs each in the first and third innings en route to the win. In the opening frame, Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) drew a leadoff walk before Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) singled an 0-2 pitch through the left side. A Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) infield single loaded the bases for Robby Swab (Kernersville, N.C.). A wild pitch from starter Travis Burnette brought in Lizanich from third and Swab then drew a walk to keep the bags full. After a popout, Chong laid down a sacrifice bunt to put PC ahead 2-0 and get his first RBI of the day.

Knox retired Longwood in order in the first and second innings before picking up two strikeouts in the top of the third. In the bottom of the frame, Swab’s leadoff single set the table for Chong’s eighth home run of the year, a shot to left field that extended PC’s lead to 4-0.

From there, pitching and defense ruled the day thanks to PC’s fourth straight error-free game. The Lancers went three up, three down in the fifth and sixth innings and Knox rebounded from doubles in the seventh and eighth to hold the Lancers scoreless. Ricchi took the mound in the top of the ninth and allowed a walk and single but secured the final groundout to put a bow on the 4-0 verdict.

PC outhit Longwood 10-5. Ryan Hagan (Sugar Hill, Ga.) and Zebedis each posted two hits while six others tallied at least one. Following the team’s Tuesday game at South Carolina, PC heads to Gardner-Webb for the season’s final series next weekend.

Longwood’s Burnette took the loss to move to 3-7. Kyri Washington paced the visitors with two hits.
