CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A solid outing from Brett Byrum (Rowlett, Texas) and a six-run sixth inning helped the Presbyterian College baseball team capture a non-conference road win over the Charlotte 49ers on Wednesday night at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium, 8-3.

PC improves to 22-20 and will host Coastal Carolina this weekend in a Big South Conference series that begins on Friday at 3 p.m. Charlotte slips to 24-17.

The Blue Hose tagged the 49ers for 15 hits, a season-high given up by the 49ers. PC led 2-0 from the first inning before Charlotte tied the game in the fifth. Six PC runs in the sixth gave the Blue Hose all the runs they would need, holding on for an 8-3 win.

Byrum threw seven strong innings, allowing five hits and two runs while issuing zero walks. The freshman improved to 2-4 and picked up a strikeout.

Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) led PC at the plate, going a season-high 4-for-5 with two RBI. Derek Long (Alpharetta, Ga.) turned in a career day with three hits while Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) and Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) each added two RBI.

PC wasted little time scoring, stringing together three straight hits including a Zebedis RBI single up the middle to plate Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) and give the Blue Hose a quick 1-0 lead. Paul smacked a single past the shortstop two batters later that brought in Preston and put PC ahead, 2-0.

Byrum cruised through the first four innings, allowing only one hit until the 49ers broke through in the fifth. A single and a wild pitch put a runner in scoring position for a Grant Dunnegan RBI single with nobody out. A double moved runners to second and third and brought Shane Basen to the plate. Preston made a sliding catch in the outfield for the inning’s first out, but Dunnegan scored on the play to tie the game at 2-2. Byrum kept the game tied, however, getting a swinging strikeout and a flyout to get out of the inning.

A pair of errors worked in PC’s favor in the top of the sixth, kicking off a six-run inning. After a Ryan Hagan (Sugar Hill, Ga.) single brought the freshman shortstop aboard, two throwing errors allowed Hagan to score and move the Blue Hose back in front, 3-2.

Preston then lifted a 2-2 pitch to left center field and past the diving glove of centerfielder Leland Clemmons. Preston took three bases on the play and scored Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) Lizanch. An infield single from Zebedis added another run and PC led by four, 6-2.

The Blue Hose continued to chip away. Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) drew a full-count walk and Paul cashed in, slapping a single through the left side to extend the visitors’ lead, 7-2. Hagan came back to the plate for the second time in the frame and produced another single. The play scored McRae but the throw from left field caught Paul at home and the inning ended with PC in front by six, 8-2.

Charlotte scored one run in the eighth off of new pitcher Tim Corbin (Murrells Inlet, S.C.) before the lefthanded reliever closed the door and sent the game into the ninth.

Ryan Morris (Jamestown, R.I.) handled pitching duties in the ninth and threw a perfect inning to seal the win.
