CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team split a Saturday baseball doubleheader at Charleston Southern, dropping the first game 1-0 before taking a 8-4 victory in the second matchup at CSU Ballpark.

PC ends the day at 21-19 overall and 8-6 in the Big South while Charleston Southern improves to 16-23 and 6-8 in league action. The two sides meet on Sunday for the rubber match at 2 p.m.

Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.), Ryan Hagan (Sugar Hill, S.C.) and Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) each finished the day with three hits apiece. Chandler Knox (Columbia, S.C.) earned a win while Beau Dees (Blenheim, S.C.) received despite allowing only four hits and one run.

PC responded from a loss earlier in the day with a convincing win in the second game of the doubleheader, 8-4.

Chandler Knox picked up his third win of the season with a quality effort on the mound. The junior allowed four runs—three earned—in seven innings of work.

The Blue Hose opened the scoring quickly. A leadoff double from Lizanich gave way to a pair of walks that loaded the bases for Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.), who brought in Lizanich on a fielder’s choice. Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) then laid down a sacrifice bunt to give the visitors at 2-0 lead after one inning.

The Buccaneers cut PC’s lead in half in the second by stringing together two hits before a sacrifice fly put Charleston Southern on the board, 2-1.

PC answered during its next time at the plate on a McRae groundout, the sophomore’s second straight RBI.

Another PC run followed in the fourth. Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) and Lizanich both singled to set up an Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) walk to load the bases. Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) took advantage by lifting a fly ball deep enough to plate Martin and make the score 4-1 in favor of the Blue Hose.

PC then came out swinging by scoring four runs in the fifth inning. Martin struck first, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Robby Swab (Kernersville, S.C.) before Ryan Hagan (Sugar Hill, Ga.) crossed the plate via error. Preston followed one batter later by knocking a single to the right side to plate another run and a Zebedis RBI double capped the scoring as PC took a commanding 8-1 lead.

Charleston Southern used a fielding error to take two runs back in the sixth and a Bobby Ison RBI single in the seventh pulled the home side to within four.

Sophomore reliever Michael Ricchi (McKinney, Texas) entered in the eighth and shut down the Buccaneers. Ricchi held six batters to no hits while striking out two and a game-ending 6-4-3 double play preserved Knox’s win and split the doubleheader.

Starting pitcher Beau Dees took a hard-luck loss in the opening game of the doubleheader, allowing only four hits and one run while pitching all eight innings. Unfortunately for the sophomore southpaw and the Blue Hose, Charleston Southern needed just one run in the third inning to take the win and move Dees to 5-3.

PC outhit the Buccaneers, 6-4, but could not put a run on the board. A leadoff single preceded a stolen base, walk and an error to bring up Bobby Ison, who hit an RBI single to right field. With another runner headed home, rightfielder Paul threw a laser to get the out and keep Charleston Southern’s lead at one. Another single loaded the bases but Dees induced a grounder to first base and limit the damage.

PC placed runners at second base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but could come no closer. Six different Blue Hose tallied one hit each in the contest.

The game began on Friday before rain suspended play with two outs gone in the top of the first. The Buccaneers sent pitcher Tory Schroff to the hill to replace Ryan Gunther on Saturday and Schroff secured the win, going 8.2 innings to move to 5-2.
