CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning to knock off the visiting Charlotte 49ers on Tuesday afternoon, 6-5.

PC improves to 16-10 on the season and will face Furman in a weekend series that alternates between Greenville and Clinton, beginning on Thursday at Furman at 6 p.m. Charlotte moves to 17-7 with the loss.

Tied 3-3 in the eighth, the Blue Hose went to work on reliever Micah Wells. Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) began with a single before taking second and third on an errant pickoff attempt. Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) reached on a hit-by-pitch to set up Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.), who lifted his 2-2 offering to left field. Charlotte's outfielder dropped the fly ball, allowing Zebedis to come in for the go-ahead run, 4-3.

Wells then intentionally walked Nate Chong (Duluth, Ga.) and was replaced by Hunter May. A force play at home gave Charlotte the second out of the inning and brought up Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.), who smacked a pitch deep to the left field corner that plated Chong and McRae and put PC ahead by three, 6-3.

In the ninth inning, Charlotte tagged Michael Ricchi (McKinney, Texas.) for his only two allowed runs before the sophomore closed the door and earned his second win of the season. Ricchi threw four and two-thirds innings to get the victory, moving to 2-0 on the year. Wells took the loss for Charlotte.

Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) and Zebedis each went 2-for-4 against the 49ers while Martin and Lizanich each posted two RBI.

Chad Sanders (St. Simons Island, Ga.) started for the Blue Hose and allowed one run and four hits in four innings of work.

Charlotte began the game with a pair of singles on its first two at-bats on its way to manufacturing a run in the opening inning. PC answered with a pair of its own in the bottom of the third, as Martin laid down an infield bunt with runners on the corners to score Ryan Hagan (Sugar Hill, Ga.) and tie the game.

Zebedis followed by singling up the middle to drive in Preston and give the Blue Hose their first lead of the day, 2-1.

Charlotte responded in the fifth. The 49ers put together three singles and a walk for their first run of the inning off of pitcher Tim Corbin (Murrells Inlet, S.C.). A groundout scored one more and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Ricchi entered the game and promptly ended Charlotte’s rally, striking out Nick Daddio looking before inducing a pop-fly to first base. The play ended the inning and left the bases full of 49ers with the visitors ahead, 3-2.

The Blue Hose pulled even in the bottom of the inning as Preston took advantage of an infield error to reach first base. The senior outfielder stole second and came home on a Martin single, tying the game and setting the stage for PC’s eventual eighth-inning scores.

Ricchi retired the side in the sixth and eighth innings before the 49ers attempted its comeback bid in the ninth.
