ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team swept the Winthrop Eagles in a doubleheader at the Winthrop Ballpark on Saturday, taking the first game 4-3 in 10 innings before rolling past the Eagles in the second game, 9-3.

PC improves to 15-10 overall and 5-1 in the Big South Conference while Winthrop moves to 7-16 overall and 1-2 in league action. The Blue Hose return home to host Charlotte on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Bud Jeter (Columbia, S.C.) threw a complete game in to cap the doubleheader, his third of the season. Both Jeter and Chad Sanders (St. Simons, Ga.) earned their third wins of 2013 on Saturday.

Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) drove in four runs over the two games while Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.), Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) and Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) each posted three hits.

PC 4, Winthrop 3 (Game 1, 10 innings)

The day’s first game saw an even contest where both sides traded runs until the Blue Hose broke through in the 10th inning for the win. The win improves PC's record in extra innings this season to 4-0.

Chad Sanders (St. Simons Island, Ga.) earned the win to go 3-1 on the year. Sanders pitched four innings of relief and allowed only one baserunner to shut down the Eagles. Chandler Knox (Columbia, S.C.) did not receive a decision after a solid six-inning, three-run effort.

Tied at 3-3 in the 10th, PC manufactured a run for the winning score. Chong beat out an infield single before stealing second and taking third on a wild pitch. With one away, Zebedis lifted the first pitch he saw to right field for a sacrifice fly that scored Chong and put PC in front for good, 4-3.

Six different Blue Hose picked up a hit in the first game, led by McRae’s two-for four effort. Zebedis and Ryan Hagan (Sugar Hill, Ga.) each delivered two RBI.

PC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) led off by doubling to right field and eventually came around following a Chong sacrifice bunt and Zebedis RBI groundout.

Winthrop pulled even with a run of its own in the third, using a double and a single to tie the game at 1-1. The Eagles then took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning as Cody Dolan drove one in on a two-out RBI double before a wild pitch allowed Luke Maldonaldo to score.

The Blue Hose responded quickly in the top of the sixth inning. McRae slapped a single to left field before Brandon Martin (Gray Court, S.C.) drew a four-pitch walk to bring up Hagan. The freshman delivered his first career triple to score the pair and tie the game at 3-3.

Sanders took the hill in the seventh and surrendered one hit to hold Winthrop at bay and set up PC’s 10th-inning heroics.

PC 9, Winthrop 3 (Game 2)

The Blue Hose exploded for five runs in the fifth inning en route to a convincing 9-3 victory in game number two. The nine runs marked the team’s highest offensive output since scoring 17 runs in the third game of the season.

Four Blue Hose tallied two RBI each in Preston, Zebedis, McRae and Nate Chong (Duluth, Ga.). Chong hit his team-leading fifth home run in the win.

Jeter went the distance for his third complete game this season. The junior righthander allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out six Eagles in his first complete game since a win over High Point on March 3.

Winthrop strung together three hits in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead before PC roared back with three in the third. Hagan drew a leadoff walk to set up Jay Lizanich (Goose Creek, S.C.), who singled while Hagan took third on an error. A Preston double scored both of them and the senior centerfielder scored two batters later when Zebedis knocked an RBI single into right field, giving PC the only lead it would need for the win.

PC exploded in the fifth, tagging the Eagles for five runs and a commanding 8-2 lead. The inning got off to a rough start with two straight outs on two pitches, but PC recovered, as Brandon Martin and Zebedis put together a pair of hits for one run. Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) added another single to score Zebedis before McRae welcomed new pitcher Tyler Klitsch with an RBI single to plate Paul.

With two on and two out, Chong smacked a 1-0 offering over the left field run for a two-run home run and an 8-2 PC advantage.

The Blue Hose stranded three runners in the seventh before Winthrop took a run back in the bottom of the frame, using three singles to cut PC’s lead to 8-3.

In the eighth, McRae drew a full-count walk with the bases loaded to plate the day’s final run, 9-3.

Jeter closed out the Eagles in impressive fashion, retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth innings. The righthander also went three-up, three-down in the first and sixth innings before moving to 3-1 on the season.
