ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team used timely hitting and another strong start from Beau Dees (Blenheim, S.C.) to take the series opener from UNC Asheville at Greenwood Field, 5-4.

PC moves to 19-16 on the year and 6-4 in the Big South, snapping a five-game losing streak. Asheville slips to 11-25 overall and 1-9 in league action. The two sides play the second game of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Aided in part by four Asheville miscues, the Blue Hose played an error-free game that saw the visitors score one run each in five different innings.

Dees improves to 5-2 on the season by allowing three runs in seven innings. Ryan Morris (Jamestown, R.I.) took over in relief and picked up his first collegiate save, holding off the Bulldogs in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the 5-3 verdict.

Ryan Hagan (Sugar Hill, Ga.) drove in a team-high two RBI despite not tallying a hit. Nate Chong (Duluth, Ga.), Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) and Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) each posted a pair of hits as well, including a Preston home run.

The Blue Hose grabbed a run in the opening inning to take a quick lead. Preston smacked a double to centerfield before stealing third and scoring on an error. The Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the frame thanks to a double, triple and a sacrifice fly that put the home side ahead, 2-1.

A wild pitch scored Hagan in the second to pull PC even. The freshman reached on a fielder’s choice before another error helped him to third. Chong also broke a dry spell by beating out an infield single in the inning. The leftfielder also drew two walks on the day to go along with his two hits.

UNC Asheville grabbed its second and final lead in the third inning on another sacrifice fly, pulling ahead 3-2.

Asheville’s mistakes helped PC to another run in the fourth. Lizanich drew a leadoff walk that led to another error and wild pitch, setting up a Hagan groundout to plate Lizanich and tie the game at 3-3.

In the fifth inning, Preston delivered his second home run of the season to put PC in front, 4-3. The centerfielder hit a solo shot to center field that marked either team’s final run until the Blue Hose broke through again in the eighth inning. Cam McRae (Darlington, S.C.) poked a single and reached third on a Lizanich base hit. Hagan then brought the sophomore home with a sacrifice fly to give PC two runs of breathing room, 5-3.

Ryan Morris entered the game in the top of the eighth and carried the 5-3 lead into the final frame. Asheville scored on a run following a single and two walks, but Morris induced a groundout to seal the win for the Blue Hose, 5-4.
