Blue Hose Baseball Knocks Off Clemson, 8-4

CLEMSON, S.C. - Gabe Grammer (Irmo, S.C.) made his first career pitching start one to remember, as the senior held Clemson to two hits in six innings and the Presbyterian College baseball team knocked off the Tigers at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Wednesday night, 8-4.

PC improves to 10-17 on the year. Clemson sees its record even at 12-12. The win marks the PC's second in its last three tries against the Tigers and the first at Clemson since 1949.

The Blue Hose coupled solid pitching with success at the plate, outhitting the Tigers eight to six and taking advantage of four Clemson errors. Seven of PC's eight runs came with two outs.

Grammer earned his first career win in his first career start, allowing one run and two hits in six innings. The senior also matched a career high with three strikeouts. Buck Mosteller (Woodruff, S.C.) and Michael Ricchi (McKinney, Texas) provided quality work out of the bullpen and the freshman Ricchi locked up his first career save with 1.2 innings of two-hit, one run ball.

PC broke the game open in the sixth, scoring four runs for a 5-0 lead the home team could not overcome. The Blue Hose added one in the seventh and two in the ninth to secure the win.

Seven different Blue Hose picked up a hit and five different Blue Hose drove in a run. Kenny Bryant (Goose Creek, S.C.) led the way with two hits on the day. Tony Micklon (Sumter, S.C.) hit his third home run of the season as well.

Micklon put PC ahead in the second with a towering solo shot. Facing a 0-1 count, the senior smacked no-doubter into the left field seats and gave the Blue Hose a 1-0 lead.

Clemson threatened in the fifth as the Tigers found a double and used a hit-by-pitch to put two aboard with one out. Grammer ended the scoring chance there, however, forcing a lineout and groundout to close the door.

The Blue Hose struck hard in the sixth, scoring four runs to take a 5-0 lead.

After Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) reached on a fielder's choice, the freshman used a failed pickoff attempt to take third base. Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) then struck out swinging, but the pitch sped away from the catcher and Motroni scored while Zebedis reached first. PC went up by two on the play.

With one on and one out, a Bryant groundout moved Zebedis to second. Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) approached the plate and knocked a 2-2 pitch to right field, where Brad Felder misplayed the catch and the ball caromed to the wall. The error allowed Paul to reach third as Zebedis crossed the plate to extend the Blue Hose lead, 3-0.

Micklon drew a walk and Jay Lizanich (Goose Creek, S.C.) cashed in, poking a single through the left side to score Paul. Andrew Williams (Augusta, Ga.) then delivered at the plate, launching an RBI double to left center. Micklon came home and Lizanich nearly scored, but a throw from the outfield and relay to home nabbed the freshman in time for the out. PC led heading into the sixth, 5-0.

Clemson got on the scoreboard without a hit in the bottom of the frame. Grammer plunked leadoff batter Jason Stolz and the Tiger worked his way to third by stealing second and taking third on a fly ball. Grammer committed a balk with Stolz 90 feet away and Clemson pulled within four, 5-1.

PC took the run back in the top of the seventh. Clemson appeared close to ending the inning after two quick groundouts, but Motroni drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive. Zebedis reached on an error by the shortstop and Bryant sent a grounder to second base, where another error let Motroni score.

The eighth inning saw Richie Shaffer hit a two-run home run that cut PC's lead in half, 6-3. Ricchi pulled PC out of the jam, however, entering the game with two on and one out. Lizanich made a tough stop on a fielder's choice for out number two and the freshman pitcher froze Jon McGibbon on a called third strike to end the inning.

Zebedis and Bryant provided insurance runs in the ninth, as each hit a two-out RBI double to restore PC's five-run lead, 8-3.

Clemson scored one in the ninth thanks to a leadoff triple but Ricchi ended the scoring there as PC took the win.

The Blue Hose return to Laurens County to host UNC Asheville in a three-game weekend series that begins Friday at 3 p.m. All three games will be video streamed on the Big South Network.
