Williams' Three Home Runs Lift PC Over Kennesaw State, 9-6
PC improves to 9-10, winning its fourth straight and its eighth in nine games. Kennesaw State falls to 9-8.
Williams' three home runs marks the most ever in a D-I game for the Blue Hose and the redshirt junior also sets a new single-game record for total bases, with 12. Williams posts the first multi-home run game since Gabe Grammer (Irmo, S.C.) hit two against Duke on May 11, 2010.
Williams went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in four RBI. Nate Chong (Duluth, Ga.) went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, as well.
Beau Dees (Blenheim, S.C.) earned his first collegiate win with one and two-thirds innings of relief as the freshman held Kennesaw State hitless in the appearance. Grammer entered in the ninth inning and fanned three Owls to pick up his sixth save of the season.
Tied 6-6 in the fifth, PC grabbed a 7-5 lead in eighth before tacking on another in the ninth.
PC went ahead in the top of the first on a Kenny Bryant (Goose Creek, S.C.) RBI single before the Kennesaw State evened the score in the bottom of the frame.
The Owls took advantage of two PC errors and four hits in the third to go up by four. A leadoff single turned into a run with a Ronnie Freeman RBI single and the Owls took a 2-1 lead. An error allowed one more to get on base to set up a three-run Chris McGowan home run that extended the home side's lead, 5-1.
PC answered with three runs on back-to-back home runs in the fourth. Robby Swab (Kernersville, N.C.) drew a leadoff walk and Chong sent a blast to left center, plating the two Blue Hose. Williams followed with a solo shot to right center, his first of the season. PC trailed by one after the blast, 5-4.
Williams put the Blue Hose back ahead with a home run in his next at bat. With two away in the fifth, Chong beat out an infield hit and Williams blasted a pitch to right field to put PC in front, 6-5.
The Owls pulled even in the bottom of the inning, tallying two two-out doubles to make the score 6-6.
Dees entered the game before Buck Mosteller (Woodruff, S.C.) took over in the seventh. Mosteller shut down the Owls, retiring four the Kennesaw State batters he saw for a perfect inning and a third of work.
PC loaded the bases three times in the eighth and collected two runs to break the deadlock. A Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) leadoff single preceded a Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) hit-by-pitch and Bryant drew a walk to fill the bases full of Blue Hose with nobody out.
Tony Micklon (Sumter, S.C.) hit into a fielder's choice that scored Motroni and brought up Swab, who walked to load the bases again. Another fielder's choice resulted in a force play at home for two outs and the bases still full. With Chong at the plate, a wild pitch brought home pinch runner John Wagner (Olney, Md.) to extend PC's lead, 8-6.
In the top of the ninth, Williams came back to the plate and launched his third of the night to right field for the insurance run, 9-6.
Grammer took the mound from center field in the bottom of the inning and allowed a leadoff single before registering three straight strikeouts for the save.
PC kicks off Big South Conference play against Liberty in a three-game series this weekend at the PC Baseball Complex. The series kicks off on Friday at 3 p.m. and all three games of the series will be streamed on the Big South Network.
