ATHENS, Ga. - The Presbyterian College baseball team dropped its season opener to the No. 11 Georgia Bulldogs on Friday night, falling at Foley Field, 6-1.

PC opens its 2012 season at 0-1. Georgia begins at 1-0.

Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) scored PC's lone run with an RBI single in the fifth inning. Six different members of the Blue Hose tallied a hit on the day and neither side committed an error.

Sophomore righthander Bud Jeter (Columbia, S.C.) took the loss, allowing 12 hits and striking out one in five and one-third innings of work.

Several members of the Blue Hose made their career debuts on Friday. Freshmen Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) and Matt Peden (Fountain Inn, S.C.) posted their first collegiate hits and freshman pitcher Beau Dees (Blenheim, S.C.) allowed only one hit over an inning and two-thirds in relief. Peden also crossed the plate to put PC on the scoreboard.

Brandon Stephens and Curt Powell led Georgia by going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI each. Alex Wood earned the win for Georgia, allowing one run and five hits in six innings.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third thanks to a Stephens leadoff home run, followed by Powell singling and making it to third on two bunt singles before a sacrifice fly brought him home. Jeter forced a flyout and a strikeout to end the inning and limit the damage to 2-0.

Georgia struck again in the fourth, as Stephens took a two-out double to left field and scored when Powell knocked a single to right. The home side led after four innings, 3-0.

PC found the scoreboard in the fifth. Peden led off the frame with a double to right field and moved to third on a pop fly to right. Paul then brought the freshman home with an RBI single to right field and took second with a Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) sacrifice, but the Blue Hose would leave the inning with one run to trail, 3-1.

Georgia added another run on two singles in the fifth and PC looked to begin a scoring bid in the top of the sixth. Lizanich and Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) opened the inning with a pair of singles but three straight strikeouts left the pair stranded.

The Bulldogs scored their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Powell sliced a leadoff triple to right field and crossed home plate on a groundout to put Georgia ahead, 5-1. The home team then turned a walk and a single into its sixth run before Dees entered the game and closed the door.

PC kept Georgia scoreless for the rest of the game, bolstered by Ryan Morris (Jamestown, R.I.) fanning two in the eighth but the Bulldogs' bullpen kept the Blue Hose offense from generating any momentum as the Bulldogs took the win, 6-1.

The two teams will meet on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the second game of the three-game series.
