The Presbyterian College volleyball team hit over .200 and led late in two of three sets, but could not overcome several Liberty rallies, falling to the Flames in three sets Friday evening at Templeton Center in Clinton, S.C. Liberty won by scores of 25-18, 25-23, and 25-19.
The Blue Hose fall to 3-19 overall and 1-7 in the Big South. They host Radford Saturday at 2 p.m. Liberty, which is on the road Saturday at Winthrop in a 4 p.m., match, improves to 11-10, 6-2.
Leading Liberty were Caroline Douglas with 20 kills and Haley Jeffcoat with 10. Anna Willey paced the squad in assists with 39, while Margaret Latchford held down the digs with 12.
Liberty held the hitting percentage advantage with its .371. PC had a .204, second highest of the season for the home team. The Flames came away with 6.0 total blocks to PC’s 3.0. PC posted six service aces, with Ashton Stewart leading the way with five of them. Liberty had three on the night.
PC led most of the first set, its widest margin at 12-6 early in the action. Four straight Liberty kills cut the lead to two, 12-10, before back to back kills by Rogers and Davis made it a four-point set. Trailing 18-14 off a service error, Liberty turned the set around all of the sudden with 11 straight, helped in part to five kills in a row four PC errors, to shock the Blue Hose in a 25-18 first set win.
The first half of the second set saw five ties, including at 14-14 off a Davis kill. It ignited a 6-2 run, highlighted by two more Davis kills and two by Del Toro, that saw PC take a 20-16 lead. After a Flame timeout, the visitors used three kills to help them cut the margin to one at 21-20. The Flames knotted the set at 22-22 off a PC attack error, and again at 23-23 off a kill from Jeffcoat. She added two more as Liberty rallied for the 25-23 second set win.
While PC never led in the third set, the home team kept it close throughout, not getting more than three points behind until lat. Trailing by just one, 16-17, off a Martina Shamley kill, PC gave up back to back Flames points to find itself down, 16-19. PC cut it to within two again at 17-19 off a Del Toro kill, but would get no closer as Liberty scored the next six of eight points, including the final four, to take the fourth set and match, 25-19.
