After dropping the first set 25-21, PC rallied with an exciting 30-28 win in set two, but fell in the next two, 25-12 and 25-20, to drop a 3-1 decision to UMES in the final match of the Courtyard by Marriott Volleyball Classic held in Wilmington, N.C. Sept. 18-19.
PC, which falls to 2-11, opens conference play Friday, Sept. 25, with a 7 p.m., home match against Charleston Southern. The Blue Hose host Coastal Carolina Saturday at 2 p.m. UMES improves to 11-2.
Leading the Blue Hose in kills were Rachel Elshoff, Martina Shamley and Ashton Stewart with 10 kills each. Jaclyn Brewington added 34 assists, with Mikayla Register coming away with 22 digs. PC posted 43 kills as a team and finished with a .072 hitting percentage and 4.0 total blocks.
Zuzana Ondruskova paced UMES with 26 kills as the team ended the match with 60 in all and a .245 hitting percentage. UMES also totaled eight total blocks.
After dropping a close, 25-21 first set the Blue Hose found themselves in another close battle in the second with the point margin no more than one or two most of the stanza. PC staved off set point at 24-23 with a Stewart kill, and again at 25-24 with a Halle Tripp kill. The Blue Hose finally put two points together when it mattered with an ace by Register and a kill by Stewart to give PC the 30-28 win.
UMES rebounded in the third building a 10-4 lead and extending it to 21-9 and taking the 25-12 win. A close fourth set for much of the action, UMES led by just one, 20-19, but connected on three straight to take a 23-19 lead, settling on the eventual 25-20 set and match win.
Brewington earned All-Tournament honors for her efforts on the court in tournament play.
