The Blue Hose won the first set in a back and forth battle, but dropped the next three by close margins as the Furman Paladins took the 3-1 win over the Presbyterian College volleyball team Thursday night at Templeton Center in Clinton, S.C.  The scores for the four sets were, 25-23, 15-25, 18-25, and 21-25.

PC drops to 4-7 overall and stays home in its next match, taking on USC Upstate Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m.  Furman improves to 7-4 on the year.

Rachel Hall led PC with 15 kills, followed by Johna Robbins and Kelly Berryman with nine apiece.  Ashtin Frank posted 42 assists as the setter, while Mary Trimpe added 20 digs as the libero.  Frank added a team-leading three service aces as well.  PC hit 50 kills out of 142 attempts for a .162 hitting percentage, and recorded 5.0 total blocks.

Annie Bierman paced the Paladins with 16 kills, with Andrea Fisher close behind with 12.  Ashton Gregory added 10 kills as well.  Meg DeMaar led with 15 digs, with Jo Wilks collecting 48 assists.  The team came away with 7.0 total blocks, as well as 56 kills off 143 attempts for a .280 hitting percentage.

A close battle in the first set early, Furman looked to gain a foothold, using three kills by Bierman to give the Paladins a 14-11 lead.  Hall and the Blue Hose stormed back, using two of her kills to tie the set at 14-14.  Both teams traded points down the stretch, with a Robbins kills giving PC set point at 24-22.  After a PC attack error, Robbins sealed the win with a kill to give the Blue Hose the 25-23 first set win.

Furman responded in force in the second set, taking a 19-9 lead, before the Blue Hose rallied to cut the lead to seven at 15-22.  It was too little too late as a Furman kill by Gregory and back to back PC errors doomed the Blue Hose to the 25-15 second set loss.

After falling early in the third set, 6-12, the Blue Hose fought back to within three, 13-16, capitalizing on two aces from Frank and four Furman errors.  PC trailed by just four, 17-21, but two straight Furman kills and a block gave the Paladins set point, 24-18.  Following a block assist from Rachel Elshoff and Kelly Berryman, Bierman ended the third set, 25-18, with a kill.

PC led midway through the fourth set, 12-8, but Furman came back to tie it at 12-12, helped in part to two kills from Gregory.  The Paladins continued with their 6-0 run to take a 14-12 lead.  The Blue Hose knotted the score at 16-16 off two kills and an ace from Robbins, before retaking the lead at 18-16 off an Elshoff kill and Furman error.

Trailing 18-20, Furman rattled off five unanswered to storm back to a 23-20 lead.  Elshoff’s kill made it 23-21, but Amelia Bohlander and Ashton Gregory ended the rally, set and match, 25-21, with back to back kills.
