Shelby Petik went two-for-four, which included a two-RBI single in the third inning, while Leslie Hensley threw a one-hitter, to lead the Presbyterian College softball team to the 4-1 win over Liberty in an elimination game of the Big South Tournament sponsored by Musco Lighting and Brookwood Farms BBQ being held in Radford, Va., May 10-13.
PC won its first ever Big South tournament game to go to 20-32 overall. The Blue Hose will play either Radford or Gardner Webb in another elimination game Friday, May 11 at 4:30 p.m. Liberty ends its season at 19-36.
With two outs in the top of third, Tera Powell singled up the middle and advanced to third the next at-bat off a Cat Tarvin single. Tarvin stole second to put runners on second and third before Petik laced a single down the right field line to send in two runners to, making it a 2-0 game for PC.
Liberty responded in the bottom of the third when Kelby Allen advanced to first and second base on an error by the right fielder and took third the next play. She scored off Sammi Shivock's single to right field, as Liberty cut the margin to one.
PC opened the sixth inning with three straight singles, the last by Tarvin which resulted in Mclean scoring to make it 3-1. Padgett Harrington came into pinch-hit two batters later and singled through the right side to bring home Tarvin as PC took the 4-1 lead.
Hensley shut down the Flames after the third inning, retiring the final 12 of 13 batters to give PC the win.
Hensley (11-16) went the distance for PC, striking out seven, while surrendering just one unearned run off one hit.
Grace Nordan (1-4) picked up the loss, pitching 2.2 innings and giving up two runs off four hits with three strikeouts.
