CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College football team fell just short against Gardner-Webb on Halloween on Saturday, falling 14-10 to the Runnin’ Bulldogs at Bailey Memorial Stadium. The Blue Hose fell by less than a touchdown for the third straight game.
Donelle Williams recorded 11 tackles to lead the PC defense. Williams now has 372 career tackles, moving him in to third place in Big South history in career tackles. Ed Britt recorded seven tackles in the game, while Ugonna Akoh forced a fumble that Curtis Bey recovered.
PC was led on offense by running backs Darrell Bridges and Quahlin Patterson, each rushing for a team-high-tying 38 yards. The 38 yards for Patterson was a career high for the freshman with a career-high nine carries as well. The Blue Hose totaled 160 rushing yards as a team among eight different rushers.
Devron Glenn scored the lone PC touchdown, coming on the ground. He carried the ball three times for 28 yards, while grabbing two passes for 13 yards. Freshman quarterback Ben Cheek made his second career start, completing 7-of-17 passes for 35 yards and rushing 11 times for 17 yards rushing.
PC scored first in the game with a touchdown midway through the second quarter. Quahlin Patterson reeled off a 25-yard run to give the Blue Hose the ball at the GWU 12. Devron Glenn then scored his first touchdown of the season on the ensuing play, a 12-yard rush on a reverse.
Gardner-Webb would answer on the following drive, going 75 yards on seven plays for a touchdown. Mike Estes hauled in a 38-yard pass from Tyrell Maxwell to key the drive and move the ball in to PC territory. Five plays later, Kerry Bernard punched it in from two yards out to tie the game at 7-7.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs got the scoring started in the second half with a score midway through the third quarter. Maxwell once again found Estes, this time for 33 yards for a touchdown to put GWU ahead 14-7.
PC would cut the lead to 14-10 with a 26-yard field goal from freshman kicker Brett Norton but would get no closer from there. It was the third make of the season for Norton and his second in the last three games.
Gardner-Webb was led by Maxwell with 105 rushing yards on 20 carries and 97 yards passing on eight completions and one touchdown. Estes was the leading receiver with a game-high 71 receiving yards on just two receptions. Bernard added 56 rushing yards on 14 carries with one touchdown.
PC is back on the gridiron on Saturday, November 7, when it travels to Liberty at 3:30 p.m.
