Phoebe Wu tallied 22 kills to lead the Winthrop Eagles to the 3-0 win over the Presbyterian College volleyball team in the Big South and regular season finale for both teams. The Eagles won the sets by scores of 25-17, 25-22, and 26-24. Allie Wright paced PC with 14 kills.
Scoring the Match
Winthrop snapped an 11-11 tie in the first set with a 6-2 run to build a 17-13 lead. The Eagles extended the lead to 20-15 before an Allie Wright kill and a bad Winthrop set cut the margin to three at 20-17. That would be it as the Eagles scored the final five points to come away with the 25-17 first set win.
PC took the early 11-5 lead in the second set, with the Eagles cutting the margin to two, 12-10, off a 5- 1 run. Down by one at 16-17, the Eagles used a Phoebe Wu kill to knot the set at 17-17. It was the start of a 5-0 run that saw the Eagles take a 21-17 lead. A 4-1 run by PC, made it a one-point set at 23-22, but the Eagles finished with a Wu kill and a Hannah Lackey service ace to take the 25-22 second set win.
Winthrop lead early in set three, holding as much as a four-point margin, 15-11. A 10-2 run by the Blue Hose gave the home team a 21-17 lead, however. Trailing 23-19 after a Caroline Henderson kill, Winthrop rallied with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 23-23. A Henderson kill stopped the Winthrop scoring and gave the home team the 24-23 lead, but that was it as the Eagles took the next three off three straight Wu kills to win the third set and match, 26-24.
Player of the Match
Allie Wright led the PC offense with 14 kills and a .407 attack percentage. Taylor Farmer paced the team with 19 digs, with Sierra Jones adding 16 assists. Wu led Winthrop with 22 kills.
Stat of the Match
Kills were fairly even with Winthrop holding the slight 41-38 advantage. The Eagles recorded a .193 attack percentage, to PC’s .172.
The 14 kills be Allie Wright is tied for 13th in the PC record book for kills in a three-set match.
The 19 digs tied for 14th in the record book for digs in a three-set match.
For the Record
PC drops ends the season at 8-23 overall, and 4-12 in the Big South, while Winthrop improves to 17-13, 8-8.
The Blue Hose end the regular season, with Winthrop playing in the Big South tournament Nov. 17-19 at Radford.
