A six-run fifth inning from Gardner-Webb proved to be too much for the Presbyterian College softball team to overcome, dropping a 10-4 decision in the first game of a Big South doubleheader at the PC Softball Complex in Clinton, S.C. GWU scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take the eventual 2-0 win in game three to earn the series victory, 2-1.

Scoring the Games
Game One
Three straight walks and back to back fielder choices loaded the bases for Gardner-Webb to open the game. The fourth walk of the inning, this one to Megan Gibbons, brought home the first run of the game.

Jonnie Petree responded for PC in the bottom of the first, leading off the inning with a single to left. She stole second and advanced to third on a fly out from Hope Rogers. Petree scored the tying run on a wild pitch, with Blaire Miller, who was on base off a walk, scored next off an Anderson double down the left field line.

A back and forth battle, Gardner-Webb used a RBI double by Rachel Cumiskey and a RBI single from Maddi Johnson put the Runnin' Bulldogs back on top 3-2. A RBI triple from Callie Thornton in the top of the third increased the GWU lead to 4-2.

After a scoreless inning by both teams, GWU opened the fifth with back to back singles, and a sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position, a two-RBI single from Madi Lewis put the Bulldogs up 6-2. Johnson tacked on two more with a two-RBI single, with Cumisky making it 9-2 after scoring on a wild pitch. Champion's RBI double put GWU up 10-2 and capped the fifth-run inning.

PC rallied in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI double from Rogers and a RBI single from Anderson to cut the lead to 10-4.

Another scoreless in the sixth and top of the seventh set up PC to attempt a comeback. It was not to b e as the Blue Hose were unable to get a rally going, dropping 10-4.

Game Two
Both teams were able to put runners in scoring position during the first three innings but were unable to plate any as the game was scoreless through four.

Hitless for four innings, Gardner-Webb opened up the offense with a one-out double from Thornton and a single from Warley. Lewis brought one home with a RBI single, while Johnson made it 2-0 with a RBI single to right, two batters later.

In the bottom of the sixth inning PC loaded the bases off a hit by pitch and back to back singles, with just one out on the board, but a pop up and a line out ended the potential rally for the Blue Hose. PC put a runner on first in the bottom of the seventh when Madison Longanecker singled up the middle with one out on the board. That would be it as the next batter hit into a double play to end the game with GWU on top, 2-0.
