Stat of the Game

Charleston Southern held PC to only five points in the third quarter. The mark ties the lowest-scoring quarter this season: the Blue Hose scored five in the final quarter at Indiana on November 11 and were held to five points in the third quarter of a home game against Chattanooga on December 30.

How It Happened

Charleston Southern’s Brianna Lakes beat the shot clock with a three-pointer to start the game.  Allie Wagner converted a free-throw to put PC on the board, but Nayla Long scored a jumper to put the Bucs up 5-1 early. Riley Hemm connected from beyond the arc, but Ke’Asia Jackson scored a quick bucket and a three ball to kick off a 9-0 Bucs run. Janie Miles ended the run with an old-fashioned three, but Lakes made her second three of the game as CSU ended the first quarter ahead 17-7.

Cortney Storey started the second quarter with a layup, and Aianna Kelly got her long range shot to fall to trim the CSU lead to 17-12 at the 7:17 mark. The Bucs then took off on another run, this time scoring 11 unanswered. Hemm ended the PC drought with a three-pointer at the top of the key. Breanna Bretches rounded out the scoring in the first half with a layup and CSU took a 30-15 lead into the locker rooms.

PC shot 5-for-23 (21.7 percent) from the field, 3-of-15 (20.0 percent) from beyond the arc, and 2-for-3 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes of action.

CSU opened the third quarter with an Alyssa Mann three-pointer, but Petty answered in kind. Out of the media timeout, the hosts scored another three-pointer and a jumper to push their lead to 20, 38-18. Kelly drove down the paint for a basket, but Mann connected from beyond the arc yet again. The Bucs score kicked off a 9-0 run as Charleston Southern led 47-20 heading into the final quarter.

Rebecca Walker got in the scorer’s column with a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter. After a Bucs free-throw, the senior forward made a layup to make it 48-25 with 7:05 to play. Petty knocked down a pair of three-pointers late, but it proved too little too late as CSU earned the 52-34 win.

- Hemm followed Petty in scoring with six points, while Walker and Kelly each contributed five points.

- PC shot 12-of-45 (26.7 percent) from the field, 7-of-28 (25.0 percent) from beyond the arc, and 3-for-5 (60.0 percent) from the charity stripe.

- The Bucs held the advantage in points in the paint (16-8), points off turnovers (19-13), second-chance points (12-5), and fast-break points (2-0). PC’s bench did outscore CSU’s 20-10.
