Ashton Stewart knocked over a season-high 15 kills to lead the Presbyterian College volleyball team to the 3-0 win over Hampton in its final game of the Davidson Wildcat Classic held this weekend in Davidson, N.C. PC won by scores of 25-20, 25-16, and 27-25.
PC, which improves to 2-5, takes the week off before heading to Clemson, S.C., for the Clemson Classic Sept. 11-12. The Blue Hose take on USC Upstate and the Tigers on Friday at 1:30 p.m., and 7 p.m., respectively, with East Tennessee State on tap in Saturday action at 11 a.m. Hampton falls to 0-6.
The Blue Hose offense was solid in two of three sets with a .314 hitting percentage in the first and a .304 in the second. For the match, the Blue Hose finished with a .161, with 31 kills off 93 attacks. Following Stewart and her 15 kills was Samantha Del Toro with six. Sara Rogers posted a team-leading 25 assists, while Mikayla Register added 10 digs.
Both teams notched 4.0 total blocks apiece, while the Blue Hose finished with eight service aces, with Halle Tripp pacing the team with three.
Reeana Richardson led Hampton with 11 kills, with Allysa Medina behind her with eight. Hampton totaled 34 kills for a .161 hitting percentage.
After falling behind 17-10 in the first set, Hampton rallied to cut the margin to 20-18, before the Blue Hose scored three straight to increase the lead to five, 23-18. Kills by Stewart the final two of three points gave PC the 25-20 win. The Blue Hose controlled much of the second set, building a 16-9 lead before extending it to 21-10. And taking the eventual 25-16 victory.
The third set was close, with Hampton taking a 14-10 lead and holding the advantage until back to back errors tied the set at 20-20. Three more ties later and the set sat at 25-25 off a Rachel Elshoff kill. However, two attack errors by Hampton and the set and match was over with PC taking the 27-25 win.
