CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women’s tennis team closed out the regular season on Thursday with a 6-1 victory over Newberry at the Templeton Tennis Courts in Clinton, S.C. The Blue Hose honored its three seniors at the match, Caroline Ferrari, Demi Henschel and Brittany Nuttall.
PC, who improved to 11-8 overall with the win, swept the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Ferrari and Tracy Johnson recorded a perfect 6-0 set to take court two and Nuttall and Beth Taylor clinched the point with a 6-1 win at No. 3. Henschel and Samantha Calais made it a clean sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 1.
The Blue Hose then took five of six singles matches en route to the win. Henschel, playing in her final home match at PC, recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6, as did Taylor at No. 4. Calais followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3, clinching the match for PC.
After Newberry got its lone win at No. 1, Ferrari, also playing in her final home match, managed a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5. Johnson then closed it out with a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 2, as PC gets the 6-1 win for its fourth straight victory to end the regular season.
The Blue Hose will return to action next week at the Big South Championships at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in Rock Hill, S.C., hosted by Winthrop University. PC finished the regular season 4-4 in Big South play, good for fifth place in the league, its highest-ever finish, and will likely face the expected four-seed Charleston Southern in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, April 19, at noon. Official announcement of the bracket is expected this weekend, upon completion of the only remaining conference match of the season.
