The Presbyterian College softball team scored five runs in the first two innings to come away with the 5-1 win over Winthrop in the second game of a Big South doubleheader Friday afternoon in Clinton, S.C.  Winthrop took game one, 4-2.


WIN 4, PC 2

After a scoreless first inning for both team, Winthrop got on the board in the top of the second, the first run off an error with bases loaded, the second off a RBI single from Ashley Westbrooks to give the Eagles the early 2-0 lead.  PC responded in the fifth, posted two walks and a single to load the bases with two outs.  Ansley Wilbanks laced a single to left, driving in two runs to tie the game.


The Eagles took back the lead in the top of the fifth after they got runners on second and third off a single, walk, and wild pitch.  A sacrifice fly by Blake Wallert, and a RBI single by Ansley Gilreath put Winthrop up 4-2.  PC went down in order the sixth and seventh innings to give the Eagles the 4-2 win.


Westbrooks led Winthrop with three hits and one RBI, with Gilreath posting two hits for a team that finished with nine total hits and four runs.  PC, which recorded two runs off six hits, with four errors, was led by Jonnie Petree with two hits and Wilbanks with two RBI and one hit.


Majette (8-9) threw a complete game for Winthrop, surrendering two earned runs off six hits, with six strikeouts.  Alex Cook (0-10) went 7.0 innings and gave up two earned runs off nine hits, while striking out four and walking just one batter.


WIN 0, PC 0

Wallert opened game two with a two-out single for the Eagles in the top of the first.  Gilreath brought her home with a RBI double the next at-bat to give Winthrop the 1-0 lead.  Wilbanks continued her hot bat with a one-out single in the bottom of the first.  It was the first of three straight singles by the, the third a RBI shot by Camryn Alverson to bring home Hyatt for the first run.  Two batters later Presley Bissett laced a double to left field, driving in runs number two and three as PC opened up a 3-1 lead.


PC made it 5-1 in the bottom of the second capitalizing on three straight two-out singles.  The final one was a two-RBI single by Hyatt to give the home team the four-run lead.  Both teams had chances the next several innings but couldn’t get runs across with the final scoring rounding out at 5-1, PC.


The Blue Hose had eight hits and five runs.  They were led by Hyatt with two hits and two RBI.  Wilbanks had two hits as well, with Bissett recording two RBI.  Winthrop, which finished with one run off seven hits and two errors, was led by Gilreath with two hits and one RBI.


Kaylee Allen (1-14) went 7.0 innings for PC.  She struck out three while surrendering just one run off seven hits.   Madysson Watson (4-5) went 1.2 innings and gave up five runs off five hits.  Sabrina Shroades came in relief for 4.1 innings, giving up just one hit.


For the Record

PC moves to 3-30 overall and 1-10 in the Big South, while Winthrop goes to 14-20, 4-7.

With rain in the area all day Saturday, PC and Winthrop return Sunday for a single game at 1 p.m., to close out the series.
