AUBURN, Ala. – The Presbyterian College baseball team came up short of a series win over Auburn, falling to the Tigers, 8-0, in the series finale on a cold Sunday afternoon at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Ala. PC drops to 9-9 on the season, while Auburn improved to 12-5.

How It Happened

Auburn got a lone, unearned run in both the first and third innings to take an early lead. Jonah Todd drew a leadoff walk in the first, moved to second on a wild pitch with two outs and then scored on an error by the third baseman for the first run of the game. With two outs in the third, Daniel Robert singled to left, stole second and then scored on an error by the shortstop to make it a 2-0 game.

The Tigers added a run in the fourth, also without the benefit of a hit. AU loaded the bases with three walks and with two outs, a hit-by-pitch allowed a run to score, making it 3-0 game.

PC got its best scoring opportunity in the fifth. Brett Auckland led off the inning with a walk to put a man aboard. After a strikeout, Glen Casaceli reached on an error by the shortstop and Andrew Bladt followed with a single to right to load the bases with just one out. AU hurler Daniel Davis was able to wiggle out of the jam with an infield fly and a flyout to left to maintain the lead.

Auburn then broke it open with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth, all coming with two outs. After a 5-4-3 double play, Blake Logan walked and Conor Davis singled to put two aboard. After a PC pitching change, the Tigers came up with three straight singles to score three straight runs and extend the lead to 6-0. They would tack on two more in the eighth, coming on an error by the second baseman and an RBI double to left by Davis.

The Blue Hose nearly broke up the shutout with a run in the ninth. With two outs, Jack McLaughlin got a pinch-hit double of the wall in left field to put a runner in scoring position. Guy Casaceli followed with a line drive single off the pitcher that ricocheted to the shortstop, who was able to throw out McLaughlin on a close play at the plate to end the game.
