GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team’s three runs in the third inning was enough to give the Blue Hose the 3-2 victory over North Carolina A&T on Wednesday afternoon, as the rains came and forced the game to be stopped after the seventh inning at War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. PC improves to 5-5 with the win, while the Aggies drop to 4-3 on the year.
How It Happened
North Carolina A&T started the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first. The first two batters of the game reached for the Aggies with a walk and a single. Two batters later, with runners at second and third with one out, Dawnoven Smith singled to center to score both and give NCAT the 2-0 lead.
The Blue Hose took the lead with a three-run fourth inning. Cletis Avery led off the inning with a double and two batters later Nick Wise drove him in with an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game. AJ Priaulx kept the inning with a single to right to put two on with one out. After a flyout, Thatcher Coleman delivered with a two-RBI double to center to plate both and give PC the 3-2 lead.
Pitching prevailed from there with neither side plating a run the rest of the way. Eric Miles settled in after the rough first, allowing just three hits in his final 6.0 innings of work on the bump. He retired eight straight between the second and fifth innings with the Aggies putting just one base runner in scoring position after the first. The Blue Hose were threatening for more runs in the eighth when the game was halted, reverting back to the last completed inning for the final.
Pitchers of Record
Eric Miles (2-0) earned his second straight victory to start his collegiate career, tossing 7.0 innings and allowing just two runs on five hits with two strikeouts against two walks. The rookie was in the strike zone throughout the game, recording 66 strikes in his 90 pitches thrown.
Michael Johnson (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with one walk against five strikeouts.
Player of the Game
Eric Miles was excellent again in just his second career outing, settling in to hold NC A&T to just three hits after allowing two runs in the first inning. The freshman has worked 12.0 innings now on the season, allowing just three runs on eight hits in two starts to the tune of a 2.25 ERA for two victories.
- Thatcher Coleman delivered the hit to give the Blue Hose the lead in third, coming up with a two-RBI double to center to put PC in front for good. He finished 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
- Nick Wise continue his strong play at the plate, driving in PC’s other of the game with an RBI single.
- The win was another one-run victory for the Blue Hose with each of its last three wins now coming by just a lone run. It was fourth one-run win for PC in five games.
The Blue Hose return to action on Friday in game one of the First Pitch Invitational, taking on UT Martin at noon on at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C.
